Just A Couple Questions????
 

:) Hi, I have been doing a lot of reading in here!!! Have learned so much from you people!!! Thanks!!! But i do have a couple questions, so hopefully someone can help!! 1) i've been seeing the word nutrical ( hope it is spelled right) a lot. Can someone please explain this to me, like the purpose and where i could get it. 2) Also, my baby is gonna be neutered in about 2 months and i have read in a few breeder's sites about anesthetics, it was saying something about certain anesthetics were particularly worse for Yorkies, is this true??? And if so what kinds should we avoid or what one we should request???? :) HUGGGGS & KISSSSES

First of all, welcome to Yorkietalk!!! Nutrical comes in a tube and is a nutrition-rich supplement often fed to yorkies (and other animals) who are sick or prone to hypoglycemia. A lot of owners use it to maintain general health during puppyhood too. I have not seen it in petstores here in Alabama (go figure.) But, your vet should have some available.

I have seen a post on here about which anesthetic should be used -- do a search for "anesthetic" in the forum search. I'll try to find it too. My vet uses only one anesthetic and I think it starts with an 's.' He this one anesthetic for all surgical procedures on all animals. I don't plan to neuter right now, so it's not an issue, but there's always the possibility Luca Dean will have to have surgery, so I need to know the answer to this ? too!!!!

Good idea about the intubation. Insist the vet do it. Or a vet tech like our Kim who's been doing it 15 years and can do it with her eyes closed. On labs and other large dogs, you don't have to worry about slight jabs to find the trachea so much, and it usually slides right in after about 2-3 tries, but I've seen a few vet techs try for 4-5 minutes on big dogs, and it would be no good on a yorkie's throat.... thanks for the info Aimee. Great resource!

lucynfred, the NutriCal that we use for Toto says "For Veterinary Use Only" on the box. Our vet told us that the formula is different from what is sold in pet stores. She prescribed it for Toto because she is so finicky and it is just a "safety" to insure that she gets all the nutrition & vitamins every day. We give her 2cc every day and she loves it! ;) About the anesthesia ... there's been lots of good information already posted here. I think one thing that is a particular danger for these little babies are veterinarians who just aren't familiar with some aspects of the "little" ones! They require much smaller quantities of everything such as anesthesia, medications, food, etc. Even though I have read lots of instructions that say "up to 10 lbs." that's about twice what would be needed for a 3-4 lb. Yorkie. There have been lots of things that we have had to "divide" ourselves because it only comes in about twice what Toto needs. We feel that the most important thing we can do for Toto is make sure that she is only seen by a vet who is familiar with this little breed and we don't give/do anything that isn't approved by the vet first. It's probably not always necessary but it makes me feel lots better! :o

I just wanted to tell you that my husband's family are Newfies too! We're heading back there this summer, to St. Johns and surrounding areas!!!!!!!!!

:) I Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who answered my questions. I really appreciate it, i worry so much about Newf and the whole neutering procedure. He has an appointment next week at the vet so now i got a bunch of stuff to ask the DR. Atleast, now i won't look or sound like a fool (ha ha)!!!! HUGGGSSSS & KISSSESSS !!!!!! :)

We live in Columbus, Ohio. My mother-in-law's family all still live in St. John's and surrounding areas (Roaches Line, Greens Harbor, etc.), and my father-in-law grew up on Belle Island. His brothers live in Toronto and Wellington now. My husband was born in the United States because his parents had moved here after they got married.

I think we're heading back in August in time for the regatta in St. Johns! What part are you from?

I am from a town called Placentia it is about 1 1/2 hour from St. John's. If you have done any visiting while you have been down there, you may have even been there. There is a National Historic Park Museum there. It Attracts a lot of visitors.

Sounds Nice!!! I like to get away atleast once a year!!!! This time everyone can meet my baby Newf. I can't wait. I did not go home last year, because in 2003 was there twice.

i have nutrical but i never use it....... since toby is a larger yorkie (and a food hound) he really doesnt need all the extra calories like the smaller yorkies..... i keep it around for emergencies, like if (god forbid) he stops eating or gets sick.....nutrical is basically just candy to him....... as for the neutering, he is getting neutered in 2 weeks (and i might point out that i am allready nervous), the vet uses teh isofluran gas (ii dont knwo if he intubates them for neutering, i am giong to call and ask.....) the vet is an hours drive, so we are going to spend the afternoon and go out to lunch and go to petsmart and get lots of new stuff for toby (a testament to hwo bad i feel for him since i have on several occasions complained about all teh stuff he has anyways...)
