Adding a new puppy to the house! Hi everyone. I was wondering if anyone had any advice or information on what to expect when bringing a new puppy into your home after having a yorkie for a year and a half? I think Buddy would enjoy a friend and my aunt's dog is getting ready to have puppies soon. The last litter she had was all male dogs and I don't think Buddy would do good around another male dog so if she happens to have a female this time I am considering getting her and bringing her home. My aunt has several dogs in her house and they will more than likely be going to a no-kill shelter. Anyway, I was wondering what to expect when you bring another dog into your home? Buddy has been fixed. Will they still try to mate with each other? I plan on getting the girl fixed as soon as she is old enough as well. Thanks for any advice you'd be willing to give. The mother is a chihuahua but the father is unknown. Buddy is a 17 pound yorkshire terrier. Thanks again! |
It depends on Buddy's attitude and how you introduce them.. I made sure to make a big deal over my pit bull and almost completely ignore the fact that I brought my yorkie puppy home so that my pit bull didn't feel replaced. She is also a female and my pit is a male. |
That's a good idea, thanks! I dont want Buddy to think he's being replaced either cause he is #1 in my heart. He hasnt been around MANY animals but when hes out on walks with me he is very kind to the animals we meet. (As long as they arent birds or cats...) Our neighbor had a girl yorkie and she HATED Buddy but he would try his best to get around the fence and sniff her. Our other neighbor had a dog come to visit them with family and he was a male dog. They seemed to play nicely together just on oppisite sides of the fence. The lady who has the dogs is an animal LOVER so I told my husband that if Buddy just wouldn't have another dog here we could always give her back. I said in my first post that she might give the puppys away to a no-kill shelter but truth be known they won't. They didnt with the last litter the mom dog had. |
HI, it sounds like Buddy is friendly, outgoing and doesn't have any social issues with other dogs....I would imagine he will LOVE having a playmate in the house!! My Daizy is very friendly and outgoing...and I'm finally getting our second furbaby this coming Tuesday!! We are so excited!!! The fact that he's a boy and you want a girl shouldn't matter...Buddy is already neutered....and you'll be getting your little girl spayed....depending on either one of them...if they are dominant some dogs do "humpty dumpty" to other dogs in the house...just trying to "show" their dominance. Buddy is still young. I think he would love a playmate. Just take it slow, and don't leave them alone togeter until you are sure they are getting alohng. Also another male would do fine if they are both neutered. |
Thanks for the replys! Wabbit, you will have to keep me updated on the new addition to the house. Two male dogs makes sense now because the little westie that visited my neighbors house last week was neutered and they didnt bark or growl at each other. "Romeo" a Cocker Spaniel on the other side of the house comes over to the fence sometimes and they play and romp together. Romeo is a male and hasn't been neutered. However there is a new Pug wandering around the neighborhood and Buddy doesn't like him/her at all! He barks and growls everytime it comes around. I guess all dogs are different. I read online that Chihuahua's are "average sheddars" does anyone know if thats the case or not? Buddy doesn't shed. The new pup could be part chihuahua part mystery, lol. I guess we would have to wait and see. Anyway, thanks again for all the comments! |

Long haired chis shed less than the smooth coat...I have smooth. With a mix, you never know what traits you'll get from either side, but you are doing a good thing by sparing this pup from a shelter. |
What kind of dogs does your aunt have. Make sure its not an aggressive dog. My Rescue Scottie can play real rough he runs fast and will take down whatever is in his path. I have to be very careful. Just wondering, why is your aunt surrendering her dogs? Are they Yorkies? |
It's so strange that chihuahua's would be big sheddars cause their coats seem to short. (The short haired ones at least!) Anywho, thanks for the info. My aunt has a chihuahua that has never been fixed (she is an older dog and the vet said they wouldn't fix her?) Well, she got out of the house one day and you know how things go from there.. This is her second litter of puppies in the past year. Last time she had all boy dogs. Her neighbor has chihuahua's too, but the father is unknown. No yorkies though. Thanks. |

Don't be suprised though if Buddy is jealous... and it can get ugly... just don't leave Buddy alone with the new one until you are certain they are okay together... this could take several weeks. Chip is very territorial, but loves other dogs... but he did NOT like Smokey being in HIS home. Now they adore each other, but it got really bad to the point where I thought I had to take Smokey back. |
Well the little pups were born tonight. So far two girls and three boys but that was eariler tonight and she could have had more. Hubby doesnt want another dog because he thinks that Buddy would hurt it. I don't think so cause Bud isn't a mean dog. I think Buddy would get jealous though and that will be a big factor. How long do pups usually stay with their moms before being rehomed? |

I know yorkies stay with there moms from 12 to 15 weeks depend on size but no pupp should be taken from mommy before 8 weeks old.... I think bud will do fine just watch him and hold him as well as the new one... My home town is in WV what part do you live in?? my Home town id Martinsburg...Yeah for WVA..:D |
Well the time has come. Tomorrow we are supposed to go get a little puppy and bring it home to see if Buddy, my 1 1/2 yr old male yorkie wants a buddy of his own. Ive never owned two dogs at the same time before so any tips on how to let them meet each other? I hate that Bud has to be alone during the day when I'm at work so I hope they will become great friends. The little puppy is 6 weeks old and about half the size of my tea pot yorkie. We aren't sure if its fully weened yet though so more than likely we will just bring the pup home for a few hours and take it back to his aunts house right down the road. Unless it is eating and drinking on its own and then we may keep it over night. Also whats a good name? More than likely it will be a boy dog cause I think she's promised the two girls to someone else. Thanks everyone! |
I'm so proud of my scaredy cat yorkie. Buddy hasn't been mean to the puppy but he is kinda scared of it! I guess he isnt sure what it is. I'm looking forward to the little dog getting a little bit bigger so they can really play! |
