First time in the snow We had a nice snowfall a couple days ago, so I thought I'd take Tila and Odie out to sniff around and play in the snow, it was Tila's first time encounter with snow. First off I went into town and bought them little knitted sweaters to keep warm. I gotta tell you Odie is a very wimpy doggie. He hates the snow I'm lucky if i can get him outside in winter. Seriously, when I walk him in snow, he walks five feet, whines, drops to the ground, paws flying in the air and cries until i pick him up. The walk ends up with mommy walking him around while he smells the air and looks around. lol. Booties are not his friend, due to his skinny giraffe legs they fly off in all directions. Anyhoo, I bundle the babies up, put on the harnesses, leashes and out the door. Tila's all excited runs out into the yard stops stone cold, lifts her front leg up and looks at the snow, looks at me, looks at the snow. lol. It was the cutest thing ever. She had a great time. Meanwhile Odie is standing on the walkway where the snow had melted and is all clear. Looking at us, like no way mom, not me. I convince him to go in the yard so Tila can run around and play in it. We get to the garage so far so good, we get to the rose bush. Tila stops, starts lifting her paws, she had cold toes. So okay, I told them come on lets go in wimps. lol. We walk two feet, Odie drops to the ground refusing to move and looks up at me. Then Tila drops to the ground and refuses to move. lol. I burst out laughing, yelling for help to pick them up. I pick up Tila and then Odie and I carried them the rest of the way from the yard into the house. Spoiled brats. lol. |
Ha ha. Great story. I can just picture them. Don't give up. They will get used to it, if only for short walks outside. And don't give up on the booties. Mine hate them, but they stay out longer when they have them on. |
I can see it like I was really there....so funny and cute. |
How funny!! I can't wait to see Bailey's first snow. Of course, were we live that could be another 2-3 months. So, booties, huh? I think I'll get some for her, maybe by the time we get snow, she'll be more used to them. Thanks for the idea...:) |
What a funny story! And you told it so well! I am jealous...i wish we would get snow here in NC! I dont know if Oliver and Brooklyn and the rest of my brew would love it....but i sure would!! :D |
What a funny story. I think Daisy would fit right in! she also doesnt' like the snow or rain. We got our first snowfall last night. It rained for most of the day then turned to snow.Thank goodness the temps were high or it would have been all snow! The Black Hills of South Dakota got 50 inches!! Can you imagine your yorkies in that?? |
I was just thinking about that myself... Living in Iowa - we're up for a couple inches this weekend. I'm sure nothing like you have, BUT a first time snow, is a first time snow;). My litlle Lily may get her first taste of it. She being just 3 months - it's hard to say what she'll think. The bummer is we were doing "fairly" well getting her out to pee... Well, there goes that - maybe the garage, my husband will love that, tee hee!:D |

Wonderful story!! |
What a cute story! The one time mine did see snow...which was a minimal amount that melted in hours, they FREAKED and didn't want to go outside. Trixie kept barking and growling at it. |
Last week , we had snow . It was so funny to look at Nathan and Frimousse playing . They had their little coats and booties on . |
We got our first light snow this morning when I let my Yorkie out she wouldn't leave the porch. I haven't tried going out with her in it yet. |
Leo's first snow was last year. He had small snowballs attached to his fur - lol. I brushed them out but it was funny. He liked it but I didn't want him to catch a chill so I brought him in and left kids in the yard - lol. |
It really was something to see. lol. And since we're in Canada and in Alberta, where winter is like what 7 months of the year. lol. I really do need to get booties for them. Tila needs a pair and Odie, I don't know what kind to get him. He has two pairs already but they just will not stay on at all. Anyone know of any good ones that will stay on the babies skinny feet? |
It's difficult to find them. You're almost better off making your own. If you sew at all, here are a couple things to try: * Buy some cheap fleece gloves at the second hand store. Cut off the fingers and stitch some velcro around the top. A YTer taught me that, and it works great. She didn't even bother stitching the Velcro, just wrapped some around the top. Or, * Buy some fleece fabric and make some tiny ones. All they need is a simple sack. That's exactly what sled dogs use. You just want something to keep their paws off the surface of the snow. The only problem with fleece is it gets wet if the snow is melting or wet. For that reason, I'm going to order some waterproof fabric from Dog Booties and get a friend to make them for me. The Web site doesn't make booties small enough for mine. |
aww what an adorable story......thanks for sharing!!! Your babies sound so stinking cute!!! :D:D |
