? for parents of teenies & boys..... As you may know I've had Max for just over a week. At 13 weeks he was 20.4 oz (19.2 at the vet). Definitely not a big guy, but he thinks he is. I have a few questions about the tiny ones as Mia was 40 oz at 13 weeks and there is a HUGE difference. 1. Potty training - He obviously has a bladder the size of an eye dropper. But he has held it overnight in his crate as much as 8 hours. Daytime is another story. Is it just a male thing, age thing, or do the tinies really need to go a LOT more often. My DH says I'm trying to house train a mouse. 2. Leash - With a harness, is he too small to try to train to a leash yet? 3. Food - He loves his RC. Should I give him food access 24/7? He's never in his life had a sugar crash and seems to eat about 4 pcs of RC about every 10 - 20 minutes. I'd think his eating frequently is healthy. Should I put food in his crate at night? 4. Weight - Did your little ones seem to gain weight quickly? Max gained 4 oz the first week and is now 24.6 oz @ 14 weeks. (Believe me I"m not sad that he's growing, just curious) 5. Sleep - Do any of your teenies sleep in bed with you? Mia has always slept with me, but was 40 oz when I got her. He has a long way to go to get that big. He and Mia both cry and cry when he has to go to sleep in his cage at night and she is on the bed. I'm not comfortable with him on the bed yet, but hopefully someday. Thanks guys! You are always a tremendous help! |
Tucker was pretty tiny - I can help with some of the questions. When he was a puppy my vet told me to leave food down for him at all times because he was so small - they will not overeat. I don't think it's too soon to leash train. As long as he's had all of his shots, it's ok to take him outside. I bought an xs harness for Tucker & he's always been great on a leash. I did not let him sleep in my bed until he was bigger. It was hard because Biddy was in the bed with us & I felt bad because we were all snuggled up in the bed & he was in his little bed on the floor - but I didn't want to risk him falling (or being pushed!) off the bed, or being rolled over on. Good luck!!!!! |
As puppies I free feed and they sleep in their playpne beside the bed until early moring potty and then they come to bed at about 5 am. Puppies in general need to go a lot and tinies probably more. Ava can hold it for a good while too but usually 6 hours is her max. |
teeny boy Matise was 4 months when we got him and weighed 2 lbs. He just turned 1 on Aug. 16 and weighs 3 lbs. 1. Potty training - Matise holds it too at night but during the day he is the same. I think it is because they are up and playing, etc. 2. Leash - I didn't have any problem, go for it, just use lots of positive reinforcement. i did use a harness. 3. Food - i feed 3 times a day breakfast 8am, lunch1:30pm, dinner6-8pm. I think that is better so that I know the last time he ate in case he gets sick or whatever. Then I have that info. Plus then I know when he has to poo so i can help with the house training. 4. Weight - not fast very gradual. 5. Sleep - Matise always has slept in the bed, but my husband and I are light sleepers and wake the minute he moves, plus he always sleeps on my chest when i sleep on my back or next to my chest when i sleep on my side. When I got Matise he wasn't that small but I hope this info helps! :) |
Jewels was pretty tiny. She was more difficult to housetrain. I kept food out for her all the time and also gave her nutrical. I didnt let her start sleeping in our bed untill she was about 4 months old. |
Oh I forgot to say she did seem to pick up weight fast but it was in smaller amounts than my 7 lb yorkie. |
Polly was 1lb 4 oz when I got her at 12 wks, she is 6 months now and has doubled her weight and now weighs 2 lb 9 oz. I am like Biddy's Mom I feel bad that Polly doesn't sleep in the bed with me, but she is still small and I am scared she will get hurt. Rudy and Maddie sleep in the bed with me and Polly has a bed by my bed and she goes right to it when I go to sleep. When the go potty in the morning and come in I put Polly on the bed to sleep with me and she just snuggles right by me. I am going to have to get a bigger bed with three sleeping with me. lol |
I don't think Shelby is all that tiny, but she started sleeping with us when she was just about 2lbs. I love having her next to me. |
gcm, your DH is so right! You are trying to housetrain a mouse. Very funny! Or at least a yorkie with a bladder the size of a mouse. When I first got Bo I took him out every 45 min. - an hour. Of course it will get better. Bo is nine months old and he still wants to go out every couple of hours when he's active. When he's napping, he can hold it for 4 hours or more and he doesn't have to go out in the middle of the night. I found that housetraining a yorkie was harder than any dog I ever had. But it's soooo worth it! Hang in there. I just learned to enjoy our time outside together. |
