Small children? I am wondering how many of you ladies have any small children besides your furbabies? I know some have older children but I'm wondering how many of you have small children under 6? I have a 2 year old daughter and 4 year old step son. I didn't think having a small dog would be hard but I have to be extra cautious and Stormy is quite the "baby" too. I totally feel like I have a toddler and newborn that can walk now. How do you ladies deal with having young children around your yorkie? any advice would be great. Am I spoiling Stormy too much by carrying her around and bringing her places with me as I do with my daughter. lol My hubby is starting to get jealous!! Ahh the joys of having a yorkie :p |
My Daughter was 5 when we got ours. You have to be more careful when they are pups. We always had her sit down before she held them. We had to teach her the yorkie shuffle so she didnt step on them. Another thing you have to be careful of are your children accidentally dropping something on them. You also have to make sure any children that come in the house are aware of your rules regarding the pup. That is in fact the only incident we have had with a child hurting our pups, My Daughter had a friend over and he kicked Chachi in the ribs. Hes not allowed at our house ever again. Thankfully Chachi was an adult and wasnt hurt except bruised |
My daughter is 2.5 years old and she does very well with Pepe...we were very worried at first...but she is a lil mommy to her dolls and treats him the same she is very gentle and always worried if hes ok :) She pats his butt and tells us to ssshhh so he can sleep.....and hand feeds him food if she notices his bowl is full...I have heard some horror stories, so I have been very lucky. |
We have 6 kids ages 16 months to 10 1/2. They do great with the yorkies, and the yorkies to great with them :) We have never had an incident. I think as long as you teach your kids to respect the dog, and teach the dog to respect the children, it all works out great. |
My daughters are (almost) 4, and 1 and I haven't experienced any problems. Twinkle is almost 6lb at 5months and so I dont feel I have some of the worry that those who have very tiny yorkies have....saying that, of course they are NEVER left unsupervised. Both girls know to sit on the floor and let Twinkle come to them, not to pick her up, and when she goes to her crate they are to leave her alone as that's her space. I know that, of course, accidents can happen, and that its more likely with small children - but as long as there is constant supervision and rules in place it can work very well...it has for me:D Also, I believe that by raising my children with animals I am teaching them to love and respect them xx xxx |
I have a 9month old daughter and they all do really well together. My daughter is crawling and standing up with furniture and one of my girls has great fun moving toys around the room for her to crawl to fetch. Both the girls know to be gentle with the baby and she is being taught to be gentle with them too. I never leave them all unattented in a room so we can't have any accidents of any sorts. I'm hoping because my daughter is growing up with them that we won't have any accidents in the future because she will be used to being kind and gentle to them. |
thank you for the responses. I have been teaching my daughter also that you have to be gentle and you don't pick stormy up without asking mommy first. She does very well for a 2 year old but of course sometimes the temptation slips and she tries to pick her up but I am always there also so I just tell her a " NO picking stormy up " firmly and she stops. I just love how these yorkies are so good with children. Stormy has never growled or anything at my daughter and well lay with my daughter and lick her whole face. They are becoming very good friends :) I just was starting to think I was crazy bcuz my hubby thinks that maybe the dog is just too small to have around children but I assured him that I'm not the only one and glad to see that I am not the only one and that you can have small children and a small dog! :) |
My daughter was 3 when we got our first fur baby. |
we have a 5 month old baby here and at first it was sooooo stressful. London wanted to have all the attention and would get really jealous. she still does sometimes. but we let her sniff the baby and put his blankets on the floor and let her sniff but not touch and she got used to it. when she would get too hyper wed crate her. now she LOVES the baby and he loves her too. the first time he rolled over was trying to get London :) when he rolled over they ended up face to face and he squealed and laughed it was soooo cute. |
I got Tiffany when Bryson was one. It was really hard. I held Tiffany 24/7 so he wouldnt accidently hurt her. It was pretty stressful! But he is 4 now and they love each other! :) |
