microchipping vs. tattoos , what do u think hey everyone, i've been talking to alot of breeders lately about micro chipping versus tattoos for canine identification. what are your views on this ?? |

so do i. i've got 5 of mine micro chipped now and was a very easy procedure. i have a friend who wanted to convince me to tattoo and i just dont agree, but is not something i totally disagree with, depends on the individual and their dogs. thanks for your re ply... |
A tattoo just seems painful. I don't know anything about tattoos on a dog but for humans it's painful. Both my dogs are microchipped, tattooing wasn't even considered. |
I have 2 babies of my own. When I got my babies microchipped, my friend told me that he had his dog micro'ed AND tattooed. I asked him why he felt he had to have that poor animal micro'ed AND tattooed (while AWAKE!!!...oh my god!!) He told me that he worked with a very "prominent" animal hospital and there were so many nicely kept animals that came in from the streets. They had chips, but no information...or...tattoos and no info. He feels that there are "human" mistakes made...or just "wrong information". If you have the option of doing both, do it...if not, you should still do it. My babies have chips, but I am going to put the both of them under next week to get their tattoos. Good Luck!! Heather! |

i think it's up to the individual. i do look at the pros and cons though....a tattoo can be seen visually and a micro chip must be scanned. i keep my babies under such close supervision that i havent really thought about this. thanks for keeping me on my toes although i do prefrer the chip, but the tattoo is an option.....but they must be put "under" and that worries me with my toy breed babies...but i do wish i had an identification that could be seen with the naked eye on them, so i am still stuck in the middle you guys...lol :cool: |
I have done a lot of research on this matter. And have made a thread not too long ago about this subject. I feel that the chip is only for the very few people who would even turn in a yorkie if by chance it got lost. Now tattooing sounds better to me. You can register the tattoo and if lost or stolen, I think it betters the chances of getting your dog back with such a noticeable marking. I think a thief will have a harder time selling or even keeping a dog that is tatooed. I have talked to my vet and he does not do tattoos, but he will give me some numbers of vets that do when I take Gus in for his yearly shots next week. Of course I will ask more question while I am there. I read that it doesn't hurt dogs like it hurts us. I have talked to people who have had thier dogs tattooed and some said that it didnt bother them in the least bit and others said that the dogs were a bit frightened by the buzzing of the needle. Where have I been?? I didn't even know you can have a puppy tattooed...wow, that is crazy!! I am afraid to get one myself so I defintely am not doing that to my little one, maybe if I ever get one I will think about it more!!! What do they do to tattoo it?? Where does it go??? |
I think I would prefer the microchip. My husband has a few tattoos and he says he couldn't imagine doing that to a puppy. |
I have to rephrase my comment. You don't have to put them under to get the tattoo. Mine both need a little dental work and have to be put under anyway and I am doing their tattoos while they're asleep. I don't want them to be hurting or scared by the whole process. I know, I hate anytime you have to put a small dog under. I wouldn't do it just for a tattoo. I do agree with Monica about the tattoo being a visible marking that would make it hard for a theif to sell or keep. I feel like you can never be too careful with the protection of your "kids". |
My question about the tattoo is, if we don't think a thief would go to the vet and have the dogs scanned, why do you think they would bring the dog to the vet and have the tattoo looked at? True, its visible, but unless asked, will the vet just arbitrarily look at the tattoo and run a scan of the number? Is the database for the tattoo nationwide or per state? I don’t know much about it, but am curious as to why some would prefer one over the other because the tattoo seems like such a horrifying experience for a tiny dog to go through. The microchip is a shot, just like their rabies or parvo, it seems a lot less painful to me. |

So now my concern about tattooing them is (1) it will fade and (2) it will need to be done again. I dont know if I can bring myself to possibly put my dog through that twice. |
I prefer microchipping. Both of my dogs were done recently. |
