Bringing home new pup tomorrow! Hello all- I have been lurking here since I put a deposit down on a yorkie pup (early july - it seems like forEVER ago) and I have really learned a lot from all of your posts. Anyway, MILO comes home tomorrow and I am very excited and nervous! I had a yorkie when I was younger but don't really remember how his first few weeks/months were (he's in FL now with my mom- sometimes I miss him more than I miss her...shh). I am getting Milo from a breeder that I was referred to by a member of the ytca. She seems very nice and good/loving with her dogs. Milo just got his first puppy shots on wednesday (he's 11 weeks- she said she likes to get them to a decent weight before the shots) and she said all went well. Should I still take him to a vet to make sure he is healthy? What does the vet do exactly? I'm curious because my friend just finished his final year of vet school and said he would be happy to look at him...but he won't have access to tests and whatever else a vet would do in an office. But do vets DO any tests unless they suspect something is wrong? If all they do is check them over w/o blood tests etc I would prefer not to have to bring him immediately to a doctor's office when my friend can come right to my house. Any experience that you've had with this sort of checkup would be much appreciated! Chandra ps. will post adorable pics after tomorrow! |
First of all welcome to YT! I always think its a good idea to have a new puppy Vet checked within the first 48 hours. I don't believe any blood tests will be done. Its more like a well baby checkup. btw...its great to have another New Englander here...lol |
The vet will probably want a stool sample to test for worms. Enjoy your new Milo! |
Welcome! I'll guess that you won't sleep much tonight, but you better because you probably won't get a lot of sleep for the next few months! :D Just kidding. My puppy did quite well (in spite of me  ). She was born April 9th and sleeps until 6 a.m. I would really prefer sleeping later, but that's the way she is! :D I hope you enjoy it here. |
Congrats on your new Milo...I am sure you are excited beyond belief...I would tell you get him check by a vet for a puppy check just to start a relationship with whoever you are going to use....let us know how everything goes!! |
Welcome, Chandra! The fun for you is just beginning! Can't wait to see pics of Milo! |
I know how excited you must be feeling right now. Good luck with sleeping tonight LOL. You may want to take your new baby to the vet so that they can check him for parasites. :) |
Welcome to YT and congrats on your new furbaby! We look forward to seeing pictures of Milo in the near future...Have fun! |
I'm glad you'll be getting your little Milo. I'm sure you're so excited as we are for you. I'd probably have him checked by a vet, but call around and ask different vets you might be considering what they would do in an initial visit. It might help you make up your mind what you want to do. |
:aimeeyork Welcome to YT!!~ Just pull up a chair & get comfy!! Can't wait to see pics of Milo!!~ :) |
thanks to everyone for the very warm welcome! I'm at work now and the butterflies in my stomach have multiplied to form a small colony... and thanks for the advice about vets. we got the call that he was ready to go late wednesday night, and I wasn't sure how long it took to get a vet appt. But today I'm going to call around, thanks to all for the support and I'll be posting soon with pics! chandra |
welcome to YT |
First off welcome to the group! And secondly congrats on your new baby. When I first got Deegan I brought him to the vet to get a check up to make sure that he was healthy. They only test that they did was on his stool sample. Then the doctor listened to his heart and lungs, and checked out his teeth, eyes, ears, and to see if his testicles had dropped. I was also told that he must be put on heartworm medications too until the month of Nov or Dec, (can't remember). But if I were you I would take him to the vet for an overall check-up. Because should there be anything wrong with him health wise, you may only have a certain period of time to where you can return him to the breeder, depends whats in your contract. Plus, the vets bill will give you proof that he was seen by a DMV. And like I said earlier, he definatley needs to get on heartworm meds asap. It's nice that your friend wants to help, and he still can probably look him over for a second opinion. But if he doesn't have access to do a stool sample or have heartworm meds, it wouldn't be much help. |
Welcome to yorkietalk! Congratulations on the new puppy! |
