How to get Roxy used to a top knot? Roxy is a little over 5 months now, and the hair on her head is getting pretty long, especially near and over her eyes. In fact, it's pretty much always hanging in her eyes right now. I would like to have her hair up in a top knot or bow from now on, but I'm having a really hard time getting her to wear a bow in her hair. Right now the only clips I have to use are bows with a metal barrett on the back (the kind that you'd also find for human hair as well). Maybe they are to heavy for her hair, but as soon as I put one it, she is rolling around on the floor or trying to use her paw to get it off. How am I supposed to get her used to wearing her bangs up on her head? I don't want to have to cut them, but if she won't wear it up then I will have to, because I feel bad that she probably can't really see much right now. |
Pasquale has the same problem. He cant stand having a bow on his head. I wonder if anyone makes any bows with plastic? I was thinking about buying those little plastic barrettes..you know the ones that little girls wear(only in blue) . Those may be light enough so he wont notice so much? :confused: |
Yeah, I'd thought about that too, but I dunno. I wanted some advice first. I was also thinking about using one of those little tiny clear hair elastics they have in the hair section of Wal-mart. I haven't looked for them yet here in the UK, but I'm sure they must have them. Has anyone tried using those before? |
The best way to train her to accept a topknot is to start with a very light grooming band and get her used to that first. After you get the topknot in, distract her with a Kong or flossie so she won't try to rub it out. When she is used to the feel of having a topknot, you can add a bow. I always recommend bows on bands to my customers since they are lighter and barrettes are also a choking hazard. |

I am also working on getting Mocha get used to me tying her hair up. Right now I'm just putting hair bands on her. She still bites so it will be a while yet before I can safely put a bow on her :) Start slow is best I think. I think bows are much better than clips or barretes. Also I think barettes are none too gentle on my hair, much less hers. But this is just my opinion. |

I'm hoping this thread will be helpful to me as well, as I was going to be starting a thread just like this one soon! Wrigley is 5 months as well and it is starting to hang in his eyes really badly, but whenever I pin it up he uses his paw to get it off.... I've been trying to get him used to it, but he just keeps pulling it out. I don't want to cut it :( |
yep, I have the same problem here,,,I have resorted to using the lightweight plastic bands for fine hair,,,and he can still tell theyer in there,, and rubs his head on the floor untill its out,,and if he does leave it in for 2 minutes, then chloe startes playing with him, and it seems she always goes for his head and there it goes anyway,,:confused:..right now I have it cut short, to try and thicken it up some..but im getting ready to try again to see if I can get something in there,,its soooo hard especialy when you have other puppys and they play so hard, I put a pony in, I put him down,,He comes back less then 5 min later and its no where to be found,,:dogsm6: |

How long does it take most dogs to get used to them? I'm thinking that maybe if I just use the band in her hair first, and then take her on a walk right after I put it in, she will be distracted enough not to notice it, and then maybe she'd get used to having it up....? |
I cant get Sadie to keep a bow in her hair either so I quit trying! I just buy those small packs of those tiny rubberbands for infants and they work great! She doesnt try to pull them out. I took her to her groomer today and she put a little rubber band in it too when she was done. She told me to just keep it in for as long as it will stay in and to replace it when it starts looking like it needs it. So thats what Im doing. Sadie doesnt seem to mind it. Oh and she is 6 months old. |
When I first started putting Sweetie's hair up I used the metal clips that you put hair in and bend them the opposite way and they shut. I still use them to hold up the "stragglers" that won't stay in her rubber band. Actually I use the small covered rubber bands that you use on small children. You just have to be persistant with putting their hair up. If it comes down or is rubbed down, put it right back up. Hope this helps! Cyndi |
