Is it possible for yorkie to be allergic to a collar? My yorkie has a blue leather collar and he has worn it for about about 2 weeks and he keeps scratching at it. I thought that after a couple of days then it would be fine, but it isn't. If take the collar off of him for a day he doesn't scratch beyond more than probably once a day? But with the collar on he scratches at it constantly:confused: Does he just need longer to get use to it or is it a possible allergy to the material? |

When I first got Callie she scratched at it a lot for about two weeks then she started getting used to it she stopped so it might be that hes just not used to it but I guess it could be he is allergic. |
could be or the puppy is not used to it yet...heh |
I wouldn't make my dog "get use to something" that cause him to "scratch constantly." |

while it's more likely to be that he's just not used to it, it's definitely possible for almost any material to cause a mild contact dermatitis or just itching due to allergy. As an analogy, there are some people who can't wear leather watches-- they have a isolated pruritic reaction (itchiness) that may or may not cause erythema (skin redness). I'm one of those people- Leather on any other part of my body is fine, just not my wrist. It's the same with my brother, so there has to be some genetic aspect. |

Yeah it sounds like you know her really well, and it depends on if they are just annoyed with it, or really irritated with it. |
I am just unsure about what to do. I use a harness when he goes for walks, but I would like to have something that would hold his tag at least until he is old enough to get microchipped. I took it off of him again tonight and he hasn't scratch at his neck at all. I won't put the leather one on him and I will try a nylon one. Thanks |
Those breakaway cat collars are pretty nice, you have to pull pretty hard to break them off, and they obviously wouldn't work for walks, but if they get caught, they break away rather than choking the pet. There's some really cute cheap ones at Target, and you could attach the tags to that. |
If people can be allergic, I think dogs can too. I can't wear metal or leather watch bands, because I get a rash on my wrist. The doctor told me once that it is because leather is processed with metals. |
Personally I think leather collars are way too heavy for our little ones. My two wear simple nylon collars (Sammy's is 3/8", Loki's is 1/2"). I have some Lupine ones on my website in a 6-9" size and you can get nylon collars anywhere. Just be sure to get a high quality one. |
How do I tell if it is a high quality one? I just assumed that leather collars would be better. |
