Microchip Thoughts !

I have been thinking about getting Daisy Microchipped just because We don't live in the best neighborhood lately. What do You all think ?
But if She was to get stolen it does not trace Her right ?
My vet said it is only 35 dollers and that She can do it without putting Her to sleep but that it is a big needle !
Is 35 a good deal and what about the BIG NEEDLE !
Also is there a charge to activate the chip or whatever ?
OHHH,I am so confused
any suggestions would greatly appreciated.
Thanks You all,Tami

We just got both of our dogs microchipped when we got them spay/neutered. It was $35.00 for the chip and I think $15 to acctivate it. I think its worth it to have it done.

vainchick5 08-18-2005 11:56 AM

Just a thought: So if you're microchipping, someone would have to RETURN the dog to a vet for the vet to scan the chip to find the owner right? What if the person steals the dog?? To me I'd rather avoid giving her the discomfort and pain, and just have a very small dog tag that has the same information, for when she is out. My dog NEVER leaves the house without a leash and me. I just think Microchipping is an extra discomfort and hassle. It's probably easier when they are spayed because they don't have to feel it. JMO

I want to get my girls microchipped as soon as I can...you never know what will happen...and even if they do get stolen, and they take them to the vet for any reason they will be found that way!! I am just saving up my money so I can do it...yes it is a big needle, but a few minutes in pain is worth it, just means extra loving and presents afterwards!!!

Diego 08-18-2005 12:52 PM

My girls have been microchipped and they didn't even notice what the vet was doing . As for discomfort , they were playing as soon as they arrived home , just like nothing have happened to them .

Yorkie Owned 08-18-2005 12:54 PM

I had my babies all micro-chipped so that if they were to ever get separated from us and their ID tags, there would be another form of identification on them. We camp and travel a lot and they go everywhere with us- I know how quickly accidents can happen or unplanned events... this is just another way to put us at ease. ;)
By the way, even though it is a larger needle- my babies didn't make a peep when they got chipped. I was so worried before it was done, turns out it was no big deal at all!

soazlaney 08-18-2005 12:54 PM

Both of my girls are chipped. It only takes a second and it is over. I paid $20. with Olivia and $30. with Aimee just a month ago at my vet. It didn't cost anything to register on the web-site. I like knowing if they are lost and end up at a vet or animal shelter, there is a sure way for them to get back to me. No one can take their chip off like they can a collar. It is no guarantee you will get your dog back, but one more way to identify them.

schatzie 08-18-2005 12:57 PM

I plan on getting Schatzie microchipped soon. Her personal vet is not equipped so I need to take her to the vet who did surgery on her this year.

The needle is not bad at all, quite small and from all i've read and heard there isn't too much discomfort on the dogs nor do the dogs seemed bothered when receiving the chip.

I have a habit of being with Schatzie constantly when outside or whatnot but I also realize that things can happen by mistake and she might get lost or ??. With all the horrible things that can happen I feel a microchip is a good protective measure so I want to do all I can to keep her safe.

hockeymom 08-18-2005 12:59 PM

I have had mine chipped, I did not want to take any chances.

chachi 08-18-2005 01:00 PM

My dogs were microchipped and didnt have any discomfort at the site they were chipped.

Esme's Mommy 08-18-2005 01:03 PM

I had Esme microchipped. It was $40. To me that is just too cheap to pass up. I mean, it's just one extra precaution... you never know...

My husbands cousin lost her yorkie, and it was returned to her two months later because it was scanned at a vets office. It worked for her...

Yes, it was a slightly larger needle, but it was quick. She yelped for a second (like she does with all her shots) and then it was over.

I think it's worth it.

princessgracie 08-18-2005 01:03 PM

Gracie is microchipped, but my vet did it when she was getting spayed!

JCarlson2004 08-18-2005 01:03 PM

I was thinking of getting my 2 babies chipped too. I wish they had like a lo-jack for dogs where they can be immediately tracked and located if they ever get lost.

Maddie-Rudy-Mom 08-18-2005 01:07 PM

I think microchiping is great if you live in a town where the vet offices have the scanner to read the chip. My vet doesn't even have a scanner. None of mine have the chip, I think it is a personal thing.

Olivier 08-18-2005 01:18 PM

All my Yorkies have microchips . The puppies have them too before leaving my home .

klogan 08-18-2005 02:07 PM

Although Stomper got microchipped when he was neutered, it still doesn't make me feel safe. He still wears a collar with tags all the time. I guess all of these things give us piece of mind knowing that our dog "might" be returned ot us if they get out of the house/yard.

jenefor 08-18-2005 03:46 PM

When we inharited Gidget from my mom she had been microchiped already so im not too sure about the cost......It never seemed to bother her any....kinda freaks me out though since it does move around from time to time :( yuck. But if someone were to "steal" your pup or that it doesn't really do them any good...I mean it isnt like lojack or that where they can locate them. How ever if for some reason they got out and someone found her with 1/2 a brain they would bring them to any local vets and they can scan them for your info. If Gidget didnt already have one I would have gone ahead and got one for her while she got her "operation" :P I mean they are going to be "out" anyhow. I mean better to be safe then sorry...I guess i just figure if she were to get out and happened to loose her collar or someone were to take it off it is just a second defense. Besides I dont know if they range in size but Gidget's is MAYBE the size of a grain of rice.....

jwash 08-18-2005 04:07 PM

I did it when mine were spayed, so they were already under and didn't know the difference. My thought is better safe than sorry. Compared to price of my dogs, it was a bargain.

River 08-18-2005 04:16 PM

I'm not sold on microchipping. As someone else said, you have to make sure they get to a vet or shelter with a scanner for it to work. Also, I read an article about these dog thieves that would remove microchips before they sold them. It would't be hard since the chip is quite small. I prefer tatooing. My dogs have permanent dog licenses with the number tatooed across their inner thigh. No one can remove that and it's obvious to any one who would turn them over. Just my opinion though.

Rex'z momma 08-18-2005 04:21 PM

i dnt have rex microchipped. i doubt if someone takes him they wont chek the microship

Bella Bear 08-18-2005 04:51 PM

I got Bella microchipped and feel better knowing that she has it. She was awake when she got chipped, she was totally ok when we got home. Though she ALWAYS has her collar or harness on when we are outside and they both have tags on them, like someone else said, tags can be removed. I just don’t want to take any chances. True, if someone stole her, they would not take her to the vet or the shelter, but what if someone didn’t steal her but they found her without tags, then they can at least try to track me down with a microchip. Last month my boyfriend and I were on our way to the store and saw a dog just walking around on the sidewalk by a bus stop. It was busy rush hour and not one person stopped to look at the dog, she just walked around saying hi to everyone. We made a u-turn, parked and I went up to pet her and to see if she had a collar or tag on. She had neither. We got her to get in the car (she was a big lab), she was so sweet and cooperative, you can tell she was someone's love. We took her to the shelter, they scanned her, and she had a microchip! They had her owner's information and called them. That reaffirmed my faith in it. I know we'd all like to think that our dogs will never leave our sight and they will always be safe by our side, but in the off chance that some freak of nature thing happens and she's gone, I'd at least have one last hope that a microchip would be what brings her home to me. Just my opinion.

amspoelstra 08-18-2005 05:41 PM

I probably will get Trixie microchipped, especially because we might go back to Europe some time with her and it is required to have a microchip to do so. My vet said that we should really put her under to get the chip in, because of the size of the needle.

milliecorrales 08-18-2005 06:32 PM

Extra precautions

is what the microchip is, I had it done when the boys were fixed, it was 10 each and then it is $40 for a lifetime family membership for up to 8 animals with Avid. I had it done at the locale humane society. I also had my cat chipped. All the shelters have the scanners and it makes me feel safer, as it was stated, tags and collars/halters can be removed. If my boys were to get lost, it makes me feel better knowing that they are chipped. A perfect example was last week, I went to take the trash out, as I opened the door, both boys were sitting there, I told them I would be right back and turned and closed the door, I walk about 20 feet from my apartment towards the dumpsters, and who comes running by me, But Bengie (he has been in the house and I do not keep their halters/tags on in the house). If he was not such a total little showoff, I could have lost him, but he had to show off to Mom that he had followed me. LOL.

Thanks for all the usefull comments. Ive wondered about microchipping my dogs also.

What exactly is involved in tattooing. Imean are they put put, how long does it take , what do they put on the tattoo, where is it done, what does it cost etc.

Deegan's mom 08-19-2005 05:58 AM

I plan on getting Deegan chipped too. But he is going to get it done when he is being neutered to save him the pain. The vet did show me the needle, and it is quite a large injection. So at least this way he won't feel it. He's a real yelper. He yelps and squeels when he get his regular shots, even when we clip his nails.

I had Mollied microchipped but, the vet wouldn't do it until she was 6 months old because of her weight. Ask about waiting if you really want to have it done until she puts on more weight. I went back and had Mollies done when she was 6 months old if I remeber right they also gave her a local in the spot where they did the injection to cut down on the discomfort. We have another Yorkie that I will probably have done when he his old enough.

Olivier 08-19-2005 07:49 AM

I place the microchip to all my puppies when they are 8 weeks old . I never saw one having discomfort about it .

Babbie 08-19-2005 07:53 AM

Mojo also has a microchip...and you can say that it is not a low jack and does not guarantee his return, but i rather have an extra precaution. I still choose to believe that if Mojo does get lost, if a honest and caring person finds him, or even the animal control, i would have a shot in getting him returned, can;t say the same if he didn;t have it. I still take no changes, he always has his colar with my address and rabies registration, but it is too easy to remove...hopefully it will never matter since i don;t plan on having him lost of stolen.

By the way, my boy didn;t mind in a bit getting the microchip, it was just like a shot:)
