Pet Ordinances Are any of your yorkies affected by city ordinances? I have been living on an acreage outside of city limits so have not been affected but I thought I better check on what the rules are in New Mexico since we will be in city limits when we move. Here is what I found all dogs have to be licensed yearly 3.00 for a spayed or neutered dog, 20.00 for unspayed or neutered. You have to have a permit to have puppies even if it was accidental. It is 50.00 for a one time litter permit or 150.00 for a hobby breeder. You can have up to 10 dogs, 15 if you have a breeders permit but only 4 can be unsterilized unless you are granted permission by animal control. No puppies are allowed to be sold or given away at less than 8 weeks of age ( I thought that was a good one!!). Also our HOA says no one can breed for "commercial purposes"--I need to get clarification on that one. I am wondering what I have gotten myself into!! |
Unfortunately, there are no restrictions or stringent guidelines like that in my area. The only thing they require is that dog have a yearly rabies vaccination. However, I have found that they really do not enforce it at all.:rolleyes: |
All dogs and cats are required to have a rabies vaccine. The first is an annual one and the next are good for 3 years. Once they've been vacinated that info is sent to the city and you are sent a bill for licensing. Those are $10 per year. Cats are also subject to a leash law. No kitties allowed to roam. That's not actively enforced unless someone complains. Owning more than 4 dogs means you're required to get a kennel license...even if you are not breeding....however, just applying does not guarantee you will get a license. |

We have a local family fighting to keep their dogs. City says they can only have two dogs and they have three Yorkies total. They are owned by a brother and sister sharing a house, city says they still have to get rid of one. They are still fighting it, especially since one is blind. |

I think ours is 2 or 3 dogs. I had to have the Village come out yesterday for an inspection of our new roof and windows and I didn't know what to do with the 4 dogs so I put the 2 quietest ones in a carrier in my closet, which worked ok until he came back in the house and you could see the 2 loose and barking and you could here barking coming from somewhere else. He didn't say anything so I don't think he knew. |

They're pretty strict here, which is a good thing for the most part. They passed a bill that states dogs and cats over 4 months need to be spayed/neutered (unless they meet the exceptions). The grace period for that ended October 1. Violators get fined $100. The only thing I do not like, is the licensing here in LA. It breaks down by each city, and there are a ton. There are some dog parks that I cannot take my pup to because I don't live in that city, even though I may live closer to that particular dog park. I looked into getting a non-resident license for my pup, but everything I've researched points to no. |
As far as the city is concerned my dogs are dead. Ordinances like what we face in California are simply a violation of my basic constitutional rights. Things like this is what makes me want to move away from this ignorant state. 200 bucks a year for an "in tact" dog. Its ridiculous. |
Here I have a license to have 7 dogs. Even tho I live on 2.5 acres. I can have as many horses as I want but not dogs. It costs aver 100 a year to have the license. I think this is good and bad all at the same time. |
