Winter Walks? Hi Guys, What do you use to walk your pups in the winter? They obviously need some sort of coat or sweater but do you put the harness on over or under, or do you have a sweater harness combo? So far it hasn't been cold enough to put the sweater on but I would like to start looking for something. Thanks very much! Kristina and Molly |
Layla walks all winter long! and it gets COLD here :) I put her harness on and then her sweater (has a hole for the d ring) and then i put on her coat which also has a hole. These are the coats she wears- i can't find anything quite as warm.. they are SO great PetEdge: Casual Canine Snow Parkas with Knit Scarf |
did you cut a hole for the D ring? |

Winter Walks It was 36 here today and I took Molly out shopping and she shook the whole time ..I don't think we will be doing any walks outside this winter and its not even that cold yet.. And she did have a sweater on.. I put the sweater over her harness..Most have a hole for the ring in the back... |
Thanks guys! We don't really have any sweaters or coats for her yet but I will keep an eye out for the ones with the holes in them. Great advice! |
walks Be careful of their feet in the winter..My vet told me the pads are real thin and can freeze in the matter of mins.. When your cold so are they! Just like little babies |

Hi Marcerella02, this is my first winter with my furbabies and I had wondered about walking during the winter. Your responses are helpful about the coats and booties. Did you get thoses coats shipped to Canada? Was it shipping and handling very expensive? |
Keeping warm Try to check for Pet Stores and baby stores and yes, you should be able to get just about anything shipped to Canada. Our babies do not have an undercoat and get cold very easily. Try shopping on Amazon and EBay for yorkie clothes and such. I lived in Belgium for three years and had EBay ship there. I realized that I could buy some things in Premee baby size that would work for CoCo. And I have alot of thick baby blankets to keep her wrapped up in. I know that there are alot of sites that cater to small dogs and sell coats and sweaters. If your baby is small enough stuffed bear sweaters fit too. Keep your baby warm! warm hugs, jeanette:angel2: and coco:aimeeyork :Pawprint::Pawprint: |

I'm in Nove Scotia and wish I had someone in the US to ship things to. Duty and shipping costs more than the item most times. Now that the dollar has dropped again it makes it even more expensive. We walk Punkin in the winter too. We do shorten her walks on the very cold days and when it is cold and there is a wind chill warning we usually have an extra play in the house. We also make sure to clean her paws well when we come in to remove salt. I adjust Punkin's harness to go over her sweaters in the winter if I need to, but I will buy things with the button hole on the back if they are available. |
I would be sure to always put the harness under the sweaters and jackets. Daisy slipped out of her harness because I had it over the sweater. It seems to make the harness slide easier. |
in the U.S I have bought very warm sweaters a winter Jacket , and a rain poncho that all come with a little hole on the top wear A D ring, slips out of easily. I also tried doggie booties for Suzi but , she slipped right out of them they were a little big. Then i bought infant socks, the tiniest size, and placed a pair on Suzi, and then the booties. I still need to secure her booties on better so I used these little elastic socks that came with her Hallooween costume. She's going as Pochohauntes . That held everything together, but, she did not like wearing them. After all that ! I'd suggest looking on Ebay for those who live outside the U.S . Their are very cute clothes there. But, shipping costs can be costly . :aimeeyork |
My best friends just got Duke a few sweatshirts from Casual Canine and they all have the hole for the D ring. The only problem I encounter with those sweatshirts is that they do not cut the portion under his belly so when he pees outside, the urine is stuck in his sweatshirt. I had to modify that after our first walk. Also, it isn't as attractive, but Duke as a Puppia harnest vest so I sometimes would put a shirt on him then the vest outside to keep him warm. |
I got a nice thick coat for mine from UltraPaws, and I carefully cut a hole in the back for the Harness Ring to go thru. So that way I put the harness underneath. After I cut the hole, I hand sewed around it sort of like a buttonhole so it won't fray. I think I'm gonna do that with her fleece jogger too (cut a harness hole in it). |
It's nice to see that most of us walk our babies even though it's cold. Nothing like fresh air for our babies. This sure would make Caesar Milan happy. |
I never thought to cut a hole for their harnesses!! I have put our harnesses over their hoodies. I use a step in harness and it is adjustable so we can make a snug fit. I also have a few things that have D rings so the harness will go under those things. I want to get them booties so we can still go on walks. Jeter was just a pup last year when I got him in December so we did not do walks then. Jeter is so tiny though his legs look like tooth picks, I don't know if booties would stay on or not. |
