Maybe I am just a horrible trainer. My puppy Hooks is only 11 weeks and I have been trying to teach him little command things and start training for puppy pad. He does fairly well peeing on the pad and he has pooped in the general vicinity of the pad:) so good deal:thumbup: But he doesn't know any commands after more than 2 weeks of teaching. He looks at me with his adorable face when I use them but other than that nothing. He does know kisses and bedtime, but I wasn't trying to teach him those:confused: I just have to last until he has had his last round of shots so that he can get into this class with this amazing trainer where I have been told he is the first yorkie ever in a class of labs and german shepherds or any other breed they use for police dogs:aimeeyork |
That is very young. Some puppies are stii with their mothers to 12-16 weeks. Your puppy will learn much faster in another month or two. Classes are great. It takes slot of repetion. My trainer recommends 1,000 successful "come" when called before doing it off leash. Bonnie |
My max is about 8 months now and this is my first Yorkie... Im used to German Shephards... I have to say thatn Yorkies have a mind of their own.. Max and I are still learning how to sit and come on command. Some times he has no problems and other days ( most days ) he is just doing what ever he feels like.. These small dogs are special to train for sure.. It takes a long long time but eventually they will get it. I dont think its because they are "dumb" but because they really only do what ever they feel like.. I might be wrong but thats my impression. All i can say no matter what Max does.. I really love that little guy!! |
He is young, but it is a good time to start. I was having trouble with Gus until I took him to puppy training. I was surprised at what the instructor got him to do at the first class. Once I learned, he learned. |
He seems a little young yet. I would start with just one command - "sit" and work on that for very short periods at a time (5 minutes maybe). Their attention span is short. As soon as your baby has all the required shots I would sign up for a puppy class. The puppy class has done Katy a world of good. She is the first tiny dog I have tried to train. We have always had larger dogs. It is a little different with a yorkie. I found that short training periods work the best and once she lost interest I quit and went back to it later. Good luck! |
Don't give up...like everyone else has said...11 weeks is very young. I didn't get Daizy to come until she was at least 5 months old. Just keep it up....eventually you'll see results!!! Yorkies do tend to think they can do whatever they want...LOL So it requires patience..with the little boogers!! lol My daizy at 10 months still will sit and think about "come" for a little bit!!! |
I don't think you are a horrible trainer. You have to just stick with it. My Strawberry was 12 weeks old when I brought her home and within the first 2 weeks she learned 'sit' and 'laydown'. Not all at once...but with a little bit of training each day, she got it! Now at 18 weeks she can do those and 'give me 5' on command 100% of the time. She will even do these for my friends and family if the ask her and she does them even if we don't hold up a treat. She'll do tricks for love! ;) She is great! She will 'come' and 'stay' too, but only when it is beneficial to her or I start to use my tough momma voice. Haha. She is a stubborn girl, but very smart. It is never too early to start. Just don't give up and lose momentum. :) Keep at it and I am sure your little Hooks will catch on soon! Good luck! |
They are all different and what works for one doesn't work for the next. My little Latte is 13 weeks and she has taught herself to sit when I give them a little grilled chicken -- because that is what all the other dogs are doing. But Martini, he is much more of a challenge. Just keep trying until you find what works. Best wishes. |
