Do Yorkies Have A Natural "Smell" ?? My Yorkie has been a stinkball lately. If I give him a bath, or a professional gives him a bath, he smells like a French chorus girl afterwards. Yet I can bring him outside for 10 minutes, during which he just walks around and maybe does his business. Yet when he comes back inside he smells like a goat, and visitors have even commented on his offensive odor. Is this natural or does is come fom the food I'm giving him?? |
LOL is he rolling around in poo? Mine dont smell bad after they go out but I like them to smell good all the time so I spritz them with Earthbathe vanilla almond spritz |
I don't think it's natural. I bath Gus every two weeks, and even before the bath he smells okay. I bath Squirt once a month, and no noticeable odor at bath time. |
No, no rolling He doesn't roll in anything, he just has this heavy odor after just walking around outside. I've had two Yorkies previously and neither have carried a natural odor. I suspect it's not natural to him but what could it be?? |
I love how Cocoa smells so that does not sound normal. |

Toby, 13 weeks old, has a strong dog odor almost immediately after a bath. He was not cleaned well by the breeders we bought him from 2 weeks ago, so I'm hoping it will fade soon with some more TLC. Also, I've noticed he has a VERY strong odor in his ears. Is it possible he has an ear infection, or is this normal? His fist vet visit with us is scheduled for next week. |
How old is he, what are you feeding him, and what shampoo does he use? Could it be anal sacs that need draining? Does he seem otherwise healthy? |
Mine get a little stinky by the day before their bath, but they never reek! I will say that even right after their bath, if they go outside, they tend to soak up that outside smell. It doesn't smell BAD to me, though. It just smells like dog. Dogs are dogs and they're going to smell like dogs no matter what. Maybe you can get a between bath spray to keep them smelling fresh? We use Cloud Star Buddy Splash or Juicy Crittoure Soft-Spot Coat Conditioning Spray. |
Is he neutered? Depending on his age, I wonder if it might be hormonal? At what age did the smell become notable (has he always been that way)? Food can do a lot of things, but I've not heard of an allergy or food alone causing the whole body scent after exertion. I wish I knew more |
I forgot to ask, how old is he? Puppies can stink for the first couple months of their life, just because puppies stink. I honestly think it kind of smells good but other people used to comment on Franklin's smell when he was younger. |
Whew ! First let me say that I appreciate the interest and input from you all. He is 16 months old, was neutered at 10 months, has his ears and teeth cleaned regularly with his monthly professional grooming and bath. but a day or two later he smells like a goat again, more so after a trip outside in which he stays on his feet and just walks around doing his business but not coming in contact with anything foreign. My son tells me that my home office where I keep his playpen and crate, is starting to smell "doggie". My son-in-law held his nose when my dog was next to him. The vet said he probably "rolled" on a possum. C'mon, I'm always with him on a leash when we go outside and we don't have possoms in this part of the city. So, anybody have any tips they can share? |
Food Oh, and he eats Purina Pro Plan, chicken flavor. |

Sorry we have so many questions and no good answers yet. I assume this is a recent occurence, and prior to some point in time no problem, correct? |
