Leptospirosis ? Has anyone ever heard of the Leptospirosis vaccine? And if so..what do you think of it? My vet offered it and i told him i would think about it. I dont want Pasquale getting unnecessary vaccines. |
It's commonly referred to as Lepto. The disease has become pretty rare in dogs. More info - Leptospirosis in Dogs |
It was most likely either this vaccine or rabies that sent Ellie into shock. It is NOT recommended unless you live in an area where lepto is a big problem. The vaccine has killed Yorkie puppies. The duration of immunity is short (probably less than a year). There are many strains of lepto and none of the vaccines cover them all. It is zoonotic but you can also get the disease from contaminated water and I think there is some question about whether a dog carrying but not ill with the disease can pass it to humans even when the dog gets vaccinated. On the other hand, lepto is a very serious disease that can affect the liver and kidneys. It can be fatal and sometimes doesn't get diagnosed too quickly. This is one of those things where you have to be convinced by your own research on what is best because there are risks either way. Is lepto a problem in your area? |
Glad to see your concern for too many vaccines....If most vets had it their way our pets would have every vaccine under the sun.... Lepto is one of many vaccines that are not needed or recommended.....Here's a chart for a starting point for you....Dr. Jean Dodds is a respected researcher on this topic.... Thank you all so much for your input. My gutt feeling tells me to stay away from this vaccine. And i think i'm going to. The vet says theres been an increasing amount of cases. However I dont think he meant in our area. thanks again for all the responses. |
There are cases of it in our area so my vet gives it. Mine have never had an adverse reaction to it |
I would not go without it if it is in your area. All four of mine get it, plus my Golden Retreiver and they have never had a reaction to it. |
We have it in our area so Mayzie got the vaccine early on. She had a reaction to it so that was the only one she ever got. My 2 goldens get vaccinated for it but my yorkies don't. I am not comfortable about the whole situation. But there is not much I can do. |
Gus got the lepto vaccine at 7 months of age, and 7 pounds. I mention age and weight, because I think you should make sure your Yorkie is "hardy" before getting the vaccine if needed. I didn't realize he had been given the vaccine until the vet suspected that he might have lepto, and ordered a blood test for lepto. Results came back positive for the lepto stains in the virus, positive for one other strain, and negative for the other strains. However, the positives were considered normal for vaccinated dogs. |
My vet stopped giving this vaccine a while ago due to the risk. They don't even carry it in their office. |

You say you yorkie had a reaction. What was the reaction? My yorkie had a reaction to a shot and he was just throwing up and shaking I'm wondering if this is the reaction you experienced :aimeeyork COCO :aimeeyork PEBBLES |
