Strange Nighttime Behavior We have had Apollo for 2 months. We got him from a rescue. He is a year and a half old and previously lived with a busy family who no longer had time for him nor could they housebreak him. I am used to unhousebroken dogs, so that isn't our problem. Here is what he is doing: You know when a dog will sniff at and kind of bite at a bug outside or you are moving your finger when you have it under a blanket playing with him? Apollo does that in the evening on furniture, the bed, on my legs, etc. when there isn't anything moving, no bugs, nothing. It's like he sees things that are not there. I've had Yorkies for 30 years - this is a first for me. Any ideas??? |
Perhaps this is how he kept himself occupied since no one bothered much with him. I would try playing with him in the evening. Throw the ball from the chair while your wathcing TV and get him tired out. Hopefully after a couple of nights his mind will go in another direction. Good luck and that you coming to his aid and giving him a loving home. |
awww, that poor little one,, good answer carol, iwould do the same thing.. try to tire him out |
Carol - that's a very good thought. I hadn't considered that. He is a happy active little guy and enjoys torturing my 6 year old long haired chihuahua a lot. He grabs him by the tail and drags him off the couch, across the bed, etc. He does get a lot of playtime between the chihuahua and my husband and myself. He has a basketful of stuffed animals that we throw for him. Maybe if we increase it at night when he starts acting like this it will help. |
This has happened to my daughters yorkie...it is called "fly-biting" and is kind of a seizure like episode. When it started with Mailee, we spent 2 days at the vet and he thought possibly it was epilepsy(sp) and gave her a shot of valium and sent us home with phenobarbital. I researched on the internet and decided against the pheno. The next day...she just stopped and that was it...Here is what the vet has decided that it was...My husband had been hunting and had sprayed with mosquito repellent and Mailee (little OCD licker) had been licking his arms...the deet in the repellent causes this sometimes in dogs. Good news for Mailee!!! However, my sister has a little Chi. and he has these "fly-biting" episodes and he DOES have epilepsy. Do a google search for "fly-biting" in dogs and it will give you some really good information on what it could be depending on your dogs symptoms. I really hope this helps!!! I know it is kind of scary, but could be nothing more than even a loose tooth. |
Hopefully you'll figure it out soon!!! Just love to hear people that have rescued a dog!!! YOur awesome!! |
I was just thinking about your little baby and was wondering how he is doing? Just wanted to check in and let you know that we were thinking about him and so glad that he has you in his life now!!! and he in yours, lol!! |
He is still doing it some. We did play "fetch the stuffed dinosaur" for quite a while last night to tire him out. Right now he is stretched out asleep on my lap at the computer. I will mention the behavior to the vet and see what he says. Thanks for all the suggestions and concern! |
