Does your yorkie play on their own? Is it normal for dogs not to play with toys by themselves? Rocy always wants us to play with her, and she will bark for attention until we get off the couch and play with her. Sometimes we just don't have time to play with her when she wants. We'll give her a new toy which she'll play with for about 10 mins, and then never again unless we're throwing it or tugging it. When we leave her home alone I'm sure she's going to get bored because she won't play with her toys on her own. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do? |
Yorkies are demanding little creatures aren't they? They want what they want. It's more fun to play with mommy and daddy then to play alone. I think that may come with maturity. Buddy plays for a few mintues from time to time on his own by throwing the ball up in the air and catching it then doing it again. He likes to chew on his chew bone alone also but relies on me most of the time to play with him. I have read that those with two or more Yorkies find they play with each other leaving the adults alone most of the time. Yours may still be too small yet to occupy itself. Their so full of energy as puppies they need ways to burn it off. |
Tricksie only plays with toys if we play too. If you ignore her she will just throw them at you. |
Hmmmm.....mine does prefer playing with us (tugging and fetching mostly), but she has always played on her own pretty well. She used to get a toy, run laps around the living room with it in her mouth, growling at it the whole time, and stopping every now and then to shake it! She also has very small mice (they're cat toys) that have a tail and very short "fur" but I can feel the hard plastic underneath, and they rattle. She loves to shake those and toss them in the air. (That's the only kind I suggest getting, because others she stole from my cats that didn't rattle, she could chew through and some sort of strange white powder got all over. The kind that rattle, though, don't do that. The ones I have I got from Petsmart in the cat section ages ago, but I think they still have them---I got some that were animal prints in one pkg. and some that were Barbie pink mice in another pkg.) More often than not now, if we're busy, she just gets a toy and chews on it at our feet or in our lap. Again, she'd prefer we were playing with her, but she settles for playing right next to us. And, she barks and growls at me occasionally if she doesn't get her way! I tried totally ignoring her, making no sound at all and not even looking in her direction--that didn't work very well. I have heard that if you yell for them to stop, you are basically letting them know it's okay to "yell" and they keep on. So, what I do now when she gets sassy is to say "Shhhhh!" or "Hush!" pretty quietly. Sometimes, when she keeps on (this is usually the growling, not the barking) I say "Eh!" (whatever that noise is?!) Anyway, saying "Shhh" and "Hush" usually works after I've said it a few times. That's the exact same "psychology" teachers use on noisy children.....if you start speaking very quietly, they will almost always quiet down so they'll be able to hear what you are saying. I even sometimes whisper Bella's commands ("Sit" and "Stay")....she has incredible hearing, so there is no reason to yell! (Honestly, if she does something wrong, the volume of my "No Ma'am!"s and "Bad Dog!"s are really more for me than for her!) |
Mine will play for a short bit by themselves but mainly play with one of us |

Of course, play with Momma, Daddy or Boo is always her first choice, but she does play by herself. |
My boys will play with toys on their own....or tease each other with toys. For her amusement...Ramsey mostly likes to boss the boys around. |

Jamie will play by himself as a last resort. This is only after his endless barking has not yielded a response from me or my roommate. That's actually one of the main perks of us getting another yorkie soon. We're hoping that it'll give Jamie a new playmate so we can watch 1 hr of General Hospital each night in peace. :p |

Not my fiona...she is ms. independant! it sorta worries me how she likes to be alone! |
Pixie DEMANDS that we play with her..she's pretty hard to ignore!:p she does sometimes pick a toy from her toy box and play with it by herself but she will usually end up bringing it to us and taunting us with it till we give in..lol.. |
i also wondered about this because Tyke demands alot of attention and I wondered if it helped getting another yorkie, but i guess i just have to stop and play sometimes. i thought it was just the puppy in him, but i guess some of them want to play alot into adulthood. hmmmm:rolleyes: |
Cassi is almost 10 months old and loves to play all the time. As soon as I look at her, she'll run and grab one of her toys to play fetch. If I just ignore her, she'll do this running jump where she plants all four paws on my leg and rebound from it. Ocassionally, she'll settle down and gnaw on her rope, but it never last that long before she's up and about doing something else. :aimeeyork |
Playing by herself Mahina will play by herself when I just have no time to play with her. She'll knock over her bucket of toys and usually grabs her favorites (one being bigger than her) and take off running. She'll growl while running, shake it around, throw it on the floor and jump back and forth at it while barking. She even plays with my cat (running back and forth chasing eachother). I think it's hilarious. I do always try to find at least 10-30minutes to play with her. Since she is a puppy thats all she needs to pass out. Haha. Like right now, I was playing fetch with her in the living room and now she's in her bed fast asleep. |
Cali will play by herself, Pixie has never shown much interest in toys ever, only to take them away from one of the others and then leave it. Roxie likes to play but Pixie and Roxie spend a lot of time chasing and fighting with each other. None of mine initiate play but Roxie will start to look for trouble iw beat up Cali, chew something and then I know it's time to get down and play. They do spend a lot of time everyday chewing on the hooves I get them. |
I WISH! I have three and when they want to play, they let me know. I always thought it was because when they were puppies I would sit on the floor with them and teach them how to play. Sometimes I wish I never did that, because now they insist on it. Lol All you can do is smile :D because they are just too cute. |
Meka rarely plays with toys. Infact, Ive stopped buying them because I havent found anything that she likes to play with alone. She has two stuffed dogs that she loves, but only if I play with her. Aside from that, the only thing that keeps her busy are bully sticks and pig ears. She refuses to play or chew on anything else. Hopefully she'll be getting a playmate early next year :) |
While my two love having someone get down on the floor and play with them, they also play well with each other and alone. When I got Mo (he was 3) he would not play with toys at all. He was like a little old man. He has come a long way and acts like a puppy now. Mayzie likes to play fetch and likes a little rougher play - sometimes I have to settle her down when Mo is cowering under a chair. I love to watch them get a little stuffed toy and shake it hard. I think that is so cute. Mayzie also likes to have a catch with herself which is hysterical. |
Mine play together very well, and let me know if they want me to join them.....! When I am on the computer, they are either running through the house, chasing each other, or they are all laying on the floor beside me, resting/sleeping. Right now it's quiet, tv is on, and all the dogs are sleeping. There are 5 dogs(4yorkies, 1 dachshund) Now when the girl come home, they run in the house, make a lot of noise, and they will all be up and barking. :D |
Harvey also would rather we play with him - he has such funny ways, sometimes if you look at him he will chase around looking for a toy to bring to you, or if the family are playing with each other, having fun, he gets his toys to be involved too. He plays outside in the garden, sometimes for upto an hour at a time - with his ball or throwing a pine cone around, looking for bugs etc.....yuk! Usually when he is quite we just know he is upto no good! My husband plays with him the most - he is his little mate:) - he mithers him so much to play, even when he doesnt want to, he just cant refuse him, it is so funny - Harvey usually gets called my dog then, when he is being a pest HAHA. The rest of the time he is his pal - ahhhhhhhhhhh. |
Mine play with each other all the time, but they do have their favor toys and play with themself too, but that ussually don't last to long since one always join them:p |
Katy loves to play and play both with me, my husband or our toy poodle. She will also play by herself - mostly trying to "kill" her squeaky stuffed toys. When I am on my computer she plays at my feet. Come January or February she will be getting a new baby sister so I expect they will play together a lot. She loves other dogs and is well socialized already at six months old. I got a kick out of one of the other recent threads where the older lady could not keep up with her new wild baby. I love the fact that yorkies are not boring dogs. I look forward to getting another "wild child". I'm no spring chicken either but I actually enjoy the commotion! |
Daizy would play for a little while at a time....but she always preferred to play with mommy and daddy! Then my daughter got a yorkie and she Loves to play with Suki!! So there can be advantages to having two...but like someone said earlier...you could just end up with 2 demanding yorkies!! But the majority of yorkies do love to play with each other...LOL but you should be prepared... If two aren't the answer for you....maybe you could find toys that keep your baby more occupied for a bit...someone got a cat toy that a ball went on a track in circles...can't remember what its called..but that tends to keep em busy!! good luck |
London prefers that i play with her, but after i ignore her for like 10 minutes she will play by herself. then as a reward once she gets a little tired i play with her for a few minutes and tell her what a good girl she is. that doesnt ALWAYS work, she is demanding! but its getting better. |
My Lucy wakes up in the morning and goes immediately for her toys. She plays nonstop until she goes to bed at night. She prefers to play with her toys alone but will play with another yorkie with them. She would make such a great toy tester for a toy company. She does like interactive and talkative toys. She also loves big soft cuddly toys that she can carry around. |

I found it! Here's the link--it's about half way down the page: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/fun...baby-toys.html (Make sure you're volume is on--you don't want to miss all those noises!) P.S. I took the cardboard scratcher out of the center...don't need her deciding she needs to shred it! Besides, I think there's cat nip on it, or it came separate to sprinkle on it?? And that's not good for puppies! :D |

Playing My baby loves to play. He likes it when I play with him, but if I am not in the mood he will play by himself. He loves his chew toys also. And I'm not chewing on them so he no choice but to play with them by himself..hehe:p Try giving him some chew sticks. |
[QUOTE=bellasmomok;2293688]She used to get a toy, run laps around the living room with it in her mouth, growling at it the whole time, and stopping every now and then to shake it!QUOTE] Haha mine still do this but its usually Ebony has something toby wants and shes doing the laps round the house growling with toby at her heels and when he finally cathes her they sumasult over each other! this goes on for hour infact they get so wrapped up playing with each other we have to put them into their crates to sleep. Sometimes Ebony will come on the sofa and sleep and toby jumps on her every 5 mins wanting to play, but most days they will not stop till you put them in their crates to sleep or take them for a walk. My shepherd i used to have slept more than they do! |
