20 hr flight under the plane!?!?!? Hello all, I will soon be flying to Japan with Mascot. I know pets have flown to these distances before because I have military friends who have taken pets overseas. Anyhow that doesn't make me any less worried about the trip for Mascot. We aren't able to take him in the cabin with us as I originally hoped. He will fly under the plane which I hate. Has anyone else had to fly with their pet under the plane and what are some tips on how to make them more comfortable? The trip will be extremely long, between 18 and 20 hrs! Should I put him in a larger kennel then the one he sleeps in at night? It is pretty roomy, but where will he go to the bathroom? Mascot is 10 lbs how will I keep an unlimited supply of water in there with him and if he has unlimited water won't he constantly be peeing in there? Also Mascot goes for 3 poo walks a day..... where will he take care of that? I am worried about putting him under the plane. Any suggestions would be so awesome! Thank you so so much. Dot |
I'm not much help because it sounds impossible. That is a really long time for him to be crated away from you in a strange environment without access to food, water and a bathroom. If you can use a big enough crate, does he know what pee pads are for? Maybe use a water bottle so the dish doesn't dump? If he is free fed that should work but if you aren't switching flights in between, that sounds really stressful for him.:( |
Why can't he be in the cabin with you? Are there already too many pets in cabin already? Can you switch flights if that is the case? I don't even know how it would work if you had to switch planes and such. |
That sounds like a very long time. Some people have gottent here dogs after 14 hours but i can't imagine. I would worry if you couldn't get any onter arrangement made. |
WoW this sounds very scary to me! id be nervous for the dog. That REALLY is a long time! I would either switch flights where i could take him in the cabin...or id leave him home with a family member. I know sometimes we want to be with our dogs...but sometimes a sacrafice is in order. Leaving them home with a family member would probably be less stressful for him. |
Wow, 20 hours is a long flight. I'd hate to be on a plane that long, I can't imagine how boring it will be for Mascot! I agree with what Crystal said above. I would put him in a larger crate so he has plenty of room. Put pee pads down for him to potty on. (Does he know what these are?) The water bottle idea is good too, but you should let him practice drinking from this at home beforehand so he knows how to use it. Also, give him a few toys to play with and nice comfy blankets to lay on. You also might want to put something in there that smells like you (like a dirty t-shirt) so he has that little bit of added security that you are there with him. Good luck! |
I'm wondering if you take him to Japan will he need to be quarantine for a certain amount of time? Here are some useful links for you: Traveling with pets Moving Pets Overseas Bringing Pets Overseas: Make Sure Your Pet Travels Overseas With You! Some Tips for Moving Pets Overseas |
My maltese was flown from Brazil and that was a 12 or 15 hour flight, I can't remember. Her escort said that the plane allowed her to take her out from under the seat and hold her and let her potty on a wee pad on the seat. Im not sure which airline this was, Im sure all are different. I can't see an airlines not allowing you to take out your baby for a small amount of time. |
oooh I found this too concerning Japan Airlines. I think this allows you to take them in the cabin with you but you should just confirm directly with Japan Airlines in case they've changed their regulations. I going thru the same issue. I'm flying to Purto Rico (3 1/2 hrs) and I'm concern also. Flying to Japan is a whole game - 14 hrs is too much for a dog. My dog is 14 pounds and I will try to take him with me in the plane. Good Louck |
ohhh god no |
DEFINITELY put a water feeder in there with him. If it was me, I don't care if he makes a mess of himself, water is of UTMOST IMPORTANCE for a dog. |
that sounds really scary... I would look into some other alternatives =( Poor guy. |
