Color change question??
 
Ok, I know the standard color combos are Blue/Tan, Blue/Gold, Black/Tan, and Black/Gold. And, I know the difference between blue and black now...that's pretty obvious!! BUT, what I don't know is what is "tan" and what is "gold"?? I know I have seen Yorkies with a lighter, almost platinum blonde head and legs, and have also seen some with a much darker, richer color mostly on their little heads, but I don't know which word goes with which color, OR if I'm wrong altogether and the "gold" is something I haven't run across yet?? Please school me yet again :rolleyes:.....maybe an example pic of each would help me get it!?

I know what you mean, this is a the same question that I have been trying to find the answer to. So hopefully someone will answer it with pictures... because a picture says a thousand works... lol

I also don't understand the coat thing. My dog started out curly, and now it's almost kinky. The curls got cut off with her first hair cut. I also read some where, but can't find it now, that if you shine a light in their eyes around six months... that would tell you what kind of coat they have.

Surely there are some breeders who can help answer this question (and probably have some pics too)?? Maybe I need to post this in the breeder section....

i believe tan is the lighter version...and gold is the more richer color...but i could be wrong!

That's what I was thinking, but I wasn't 100% sure. Plus, other people have said they thought it was the opposite, so I just wanted some real conformation!

Here are my guesses from Lt. to Rt.:
1. blue/tan
2. gold
3. gold
4. blue/??--is that tan or gold? I know the standard says the hair is darker at the root tapering to lighter at the tips, but???

from my understanding gold is the more richer color that most breeder want...and tan is the lighter color...hehe..but i am no expert...

Now I'm more confused after re-reading the AKC breed standard...it doesn't mention gold at all, but does say "lighter tan" for some places and "deep, richer tan" for other places on the face, chest and legs. Maybe there isn't really such a thing as gold?? Maybe what some call gold is just the deep, rich tan all over instead of having some of the lighter tan too??

*sigh! I never knew being a dog owner was so confusing until I got Bella!
