Esme's new HORRIBLE habit... Esme goes out A LOT and rides in the car a few times a week. Esme is also a VERY independent girl. She likes to walk on the ground when we go places. Unfortunately, many places we take her to require for her to stay in my arms. Well, for the past few weeks, she has decided that when she wants to be on the floor and I am holding her she is going to howl and scream like I am seriously hurting her. She gets SOOOO loud and it is quite embarrasing. I mean, geez, you bring your cute little dog in and she acts like a spoiled brat. I just back from running a few errands and I have decided this HAS to stop. I got out of the car to drop some stuff off at the drycleaners. I pick her up and she started SCREAMING. And the awful part is, that it seems to ECHO. Well, I did to her what I would do if I had a human child and he/she was throwing a tantrum. I put her right back in the car and took her home (I didn't get to drop my clothes off). Unfortunately, I don't think she gets the message... I want to take her places, but it isn't going to work if my little drama queen can't keep quiet. What can I do to make her understand that acting like that is WRONG??? I even tried the "sh" thing that the dog whisperer does... but she didn't seem to care. |
Maximus barks AND squirms to the point that I think he will fall.....I would appreciate the advice also!!! |
Sound like she needs a little TOUGH LOVE ! :D maybe if she doesn't get to go as much,,,she'll realize why. |
I would recommend a few things...THEY ARE NOT MEAN...JUST TOUGH...like doggie brat camp..So when you go out with Esme, try putting her in a purse like carrier. She will howl and scream but will eventually get the picture..they all do. You can also carry around bitter apple spray, everytime she howls and screams, put a drop of it on her tongue and TRUST me she will get the pictures. That's how I got Coco to quit some ugly habits. It only took me two drops to get her to stop the behavior that I didn't like. Don't worry about what others will think, IT'S YOUR DOG! It's like when you have a child, they scream to be brats and people think you're abusing them or something..Or I would just keeep holding her and letting her howl, until she stops on her own. When she doesn't howl, and is quiet, praise her and give her a treat. |

I am going to try the bitter apple spray. I have never used it on her before because she never had a chewing problem, but I think it might do the trick. Do you spray it on your finger and then stick it in her mouth?? I am going to go the store right now... My little diva is staying home. I am trying to find the right carrier too. I like the one that Valerie reccomended on the thread I posted earlier. It goes accross the chest and is kind of like a duffle bag. I think she would like it because it's big and roomy. And I will have my hands free. I have to sell my other carrier first though. :( I already posted it on the for sale section, but no offers yet. Thanks for the advice. I think it might work! |
