My Nappy Dog Hi All: I have a six month old puppy with "nappy" hair. It's kind of coarse, and pretty dry. The coat growing out underneath is a softer texture, but still tends to be pretty dry. Her hair gets little mats in it towards the follicle and it hurts her to have it brushed. Does anyone have any experience with this type of coat and what can I do for her? |
It is probably a cotton coat. The best thing you can do is keep it short in a "puppy cut" |
When Daizy was little her coat was wiry and just looked bad...so I had the groomer shave off quite a bit of it, and that made all the difference! I think with some little ones you have to get rid of that baby fur....to see the nice coat underneath! |
Pasquale has that exact same hair that you're describing!! I constantly brush him. The best shampoo that i have found that makes his hair softer is Mink Sheen. That and constant brushing. Although i find his nappy hair kinda cute.:) |
Do you condition her hair after shampooing? What are you feeding her? Sometimes diet can make a difference. With that said, I've had 3 yorkies all with different kinds of coats. Daisy is the only one I've had with a silky coat. Abby's is cottony and Peanut was a red legged yorkie, so his coat looked a little nappy and didn't grow very fast. I just had Abby's puppy coat cut off and now her hair is curling! It's so soft though :D |
Tanks hair was like this till he was about a year old, then it began to soften up. Its still not great hair but its better than when he was young. I hope as your baby gets its adult hair it improves for you too. |
Hmmm...I hadn't thought about diet. And thus far she's only had little cuts to shape her fur. I've only been bathing her about every two weeks because her fur is so darned dry. It seems a good conditioner would help as well. Her hair is pretty, though. Just a little unmanageable! Thanks for all of your suggestions, I'll give some of them a try and see what happens! By the way, my Pepino's hair is kind of curly. When it's wet, it tends to go ringlets! Cee Cee has gorgeous hair, that is so easy to brush and it hardly ever tangles. It's amazing how different all the coats can be! |
Bowie has yorki and maltese hair, so it gets very very matted, we are trying to get him used to brushing everyday. Hes only 4 months but i may need to get him groomed very soon |
Still Nappy...... So I washed and conditioned today. Conditioning was a whole new concept for us. Her hair did get a little softer, but is still pretty dry. Also, she now has some "flakes". The good news is that the majority of her hair was much easier to brush, and there were a lot less yelps! She did still have mats in her shorter leg hair and her (ouch) muzzle. Her darker hair had no issues, just the lighter areas. What can I do next with regards to diet? Is there a supplement or certain brand of food? We have a store here that sells holistic stuff for dogs and the lady there recommended a few drops of fish oil on her food. Does anyone have experience with that? |
3 Attachment(s) My Riley was having the same hair issues, that you are describing. and I have been using the fish oil, and it is making a world of differnce in his skin..but that HAIR!!!:confuse2:...so just very recently I shaved it off...and OMG the differnce in what was underneath their,,::D...It is sooooo soft and nice now, I am soooooooo glad I cut off that puppy hair,Riley is 6 months old, and I think he is going to have silky hair, (going by the look and feel of what was under neath) and its cool to see what the color of the new growth is..that is my suggestion,,just shave it off,,or take him to a groomer and have them do it, its amazing the difference, no more mates or tangles, and he is so soft and shiny now,,but if you shave yours just make sure to keep him (or her) warm, I have been wearing clothes on riley ever since I cut his hair, just to be on the safe side, Ill include Rileys b4 and after pic,,you can clealy see the improvement in the coat,,and he dosent scratch hardly at all anymore.;) |
What a Stud Muffin! Mr. Riley is HOT! What a gorgeous boy! The short hair doesn't detract form his looks at all. He has a very sweet and loving face. I hate to do it with winter coming on, but Gena may get her hair cut! |
Hi I have bred yorkies for 12 yrs now, when I got my first yorkie I bought and read the book my Janet jackson over and over , the part in the book on gromming was very clear that yorkies hair is just like your hair conditioner is very important when you bath your yorkie, and if you are going to bath them once a week she even sugested a leave in conditioner so thier hair and skin don't dry out, this is a must. I have always used conditioner on my yorkies as well as a very good leave in conditioner such as paul mitchell or I order my shampoos and conditioners out of petedge.com I use EQyss premier cream rinse and the EQyss medcated shampoo they are about 60$ for a gallon but are consentated so it last a long time they also carry a leave in spray and a cream for dogs with skin problems, I am sold on these products, they do give a luster to the coat as well as help with mats and tangles , your baby is sheding her puppy coat and so their well be some tangles to deal with as the adout coat comes in this is very comon in non sheding breeds, the key to all of it is condition your baby! good luck with your new baby and I hope this helps blessing:) |
