Did His Ears Shrink I found something new to worry about. Does Gus have ears? I mean sufficiently large ears? He's 1 year old now. When he was a pup, I thought his ears were too big. They were huge. As you can see from the avatar, I don't trim around his ears. As I was feeling for his ears in anticipation of trimming I was surprised at how small his ears felt. I mean much too small. I may not trim, because this would only accentuate what I fear to be shrunken ears. Do you think Yorkie ears shrink due to letting the hair grow as a puppy? Say it isn't so. |
It isn't so. ;) |
His ears look completely normal to me...not to mention cute ;) |
i think their bodies just grow into their head, so their ears just appear smaller. |
His ears are perfect. |
His ears look great to me!! Often times when they are puppies their ears are big but as they get older they grow into them. I have two girls who I don't shave the ears on them. I love this look but it does make their ears appear to be larger than what they really are. |
His ears look fine to me:) |
I have never heard of stunted ear growth in Yorkies. I think he's fine.:) |
u make me giggle. :) I think as your pup grew, he just grew into his ears. im sure his ears are fine! :) |
My little girl ears was big when she was a puppie, I could cover her face with on ear, now she is 2 and her ears fit her body, and the are always standing up, she keeps them up all the time even when she is sleep. |
Thanks very much for the positive comments. I was almost afraid to read the replies. When I was walking Gus this afternoon, he was ahead of me. The sunlight shown through his ear hairs just right, and I could clearly see the outline of decent size Yorkie ears. I feel a lot better now, thanks to your feedback, and seeing that Gus does have ears. I guess I’m sensitive about ears, because I had a past negative Yorkie ear experience. Squirt is my 12 year old, and first Yorkie. Gus is the second, and hopefully not last Yorkie. After much intensive research I purchased Squirt as a pup. I brought him home, and my wife said, “I thought you were going to get a Yorkie.” I said, “He is a Yorkie.” She replied, “He doesn’t look like the pictures in your Yorkie books.” I picked up a book, and said something like, “You’re crazy (affectionately of course), he’s just like the one on the cover.” She said, “No! That Yorkie’s ears are up. Squirts ears are down.” I thought, how could I have missed this point after all my research? My wife was totally disinterested in dogs, did no research, and immediately saw the difference. I had even seen both of Squirt’s parents, and didn’t notice the difference in ears. She also, asked why I bought a pup named Squirt, but that's another story. I took Squirt for his initial vet check, and the vet said that his ears would never be up since cartilage doesn’t grow. What disappointing news. When I walked Squirt people commented on his cuteness, and didn’t mention his ears. This helped me accept his deformity. I tried taping the ears up, chanted, etc., but to no avail. One day, I just accepted the fact that his ears were always going to be down. People wouldn’t notice, I thought, because he was balanced. Just after acceptance, the worst happened. One ear raised up. Noooo!!! There I was with a Yorkie with one ear up, and one ear down. People would definitely notice now. Within a month, the second ear raised up. Both ears have been up ever since. So, now your understand where I'm coming from. |

Radar Ears It's kind of odd to me how once their Ears finally go up completely they never go back down? When I got Artie he was pretty old for a Puppy, he was 5 months old and his Ears have always been small and standing up they never go down for any reason. Abigail and Pom Pom on the other hand my females will use their Ears like Radars depending on the Noise? They always seem like they're on constant Alert. Except when they are Sleeping or getting scolded. They seem to show their Emotions with their Ears as an Expression. I also noticed that even when they are napping their Ears are held higher or lower as they are tense or relaxed. I was Lucky enough to see both Parents on at least one side of their Families and I was Gauranteed by their Breeders that their Ears would Stand up and they did. I never really stressed out over it. |
My wife isn't a dog person. When Gus greeted her this morning, she reciprocated. He only spoken comment was, "His ears are huge", followed by a chuckle. Made me feel good particularly since I had never mentioned my concern about the size of his ears. |
