New member Hi Everyone, My name is Judy, and my little yorkie is Romeo. I've been on this group for a very long time, but could never figure out how to post. Lol I am not comp literate. Anyway, Romeo turned 3 last January. We adopted him from Florida, as the man who had him was breeding him and then wanted nothing to do with him. He is absolutely beautiful and we love him to pieces. We have a couple of issues, one being potty training. He will go out side but then comes in and pee's wherever it floats his boat to do so. The other issue is his coat and skin, which seem to be very oily. Now he has what the vet calls blackheads on his belly and chest area, and the groomer says thats because of his oily skin and playing in dirt???? I bathe him weekly but the groomer says we need an exfoliating shampoo which is only available through a vet...so far I can not find a vet in my area that has that. This morning I did something I never would have done, but because he seemed so miserable I had to do something. I put a bit of dawn dishwashing liquid in a container and added water. I used that for his first shampp, then I used his neem shampoo and rinsed extremely well. I also just lightly blow dryed him, not being sure if drying irritates his skin. Anyway, since doing that about a half hour ago, he has been sleeping very peacefully and no scratching. Has anyone else had this issue? he is only 5 lbs (supposed to be 3 1/2) and is exhausted from scratching all the time. Any help or advice was be very appreciated. Judy and Romeo |
Hi Judy and Romeo!!! Welcome to YT!!!! I wish I could reccommend some shampoo for your little guy....but I'm sure someone else here has had that problem.. Good luck |
Well first off welcome. I don't really know what you could do for his oily skin. I know dish soap would dry it out, which is what he might need, but I don't know if you should use dish soap every week. Maybe just when he is extremely oily. I know alot of users use: MINK SHEEN - 4 in 1 Pet Shampoo, Mink Sheen 4 in 1 Pet Shampoo, but its a gentle shampoo and it sounds like he might need one with more, umph. Good luck with finding one you like. I'm sure someone will be able to give you some good advice. |
I only used the dawn this one time, never before. Romeo is also going for allergy testing just to see if he has any food or environmental allergies. I like the sounds of the hydrosurge exfoliating shampoo for Romeo and a couple of the others for my shih tzu's, but am going to wait to hear back as to what the groomer can order. I will not use the dawn again, but I have to say, after his bath today, this is the most calm and relaxed I have seen him in quite some time. Also, our vet has told us untill we do allergy testing, to take him off any foods that have beef, corn, dairy and eggs. Thanks so much to everyone...you have all been very helpful, and who knows yorkies better then those who share their lives with them....I knew I would love it here once I learned how to post lol. |
Can you all see Romeo's picture in my album? Its the only one I have on my computer right now, but will upload more as I get them. Judy |

The window doesn't close and I don't get a submit reply. Is that because I only have the one picture? I'll keep trying to figure it all out. Thanks so much Judy |

You're right the window doesn't close on its own, I thought it did. However, you will see something like in the picture I uploaded, it will show you an "attached file" After it shows this, you can close the window and click "submit reply." |

Welcome Judy and Romeo! Sorry, I don't have any advice for a shampoo you could use, but I hope you'll find something that works well for you soon. He is one handsome little guy! |
Welcome to YT!:wavey: Lots of good info on here! Paula:D Halle:aimeeyork Brutis:aimeeyork:yorkietal |
:yorkietal Welcome to Judy and Romeo :yorkietal Welcome to YorkieTalk I am so glad that you joined. I am sure that someone here can help you with Romeo's skin problem. I see that Brady's mom mentioned MinkSheen - it is the BEST shampoo I have ever used. You might want to give it a try. Also Mane and Tail Shampoo will strip the natural oils right out of the coat. It might be a bit too drying, though and then you will wind up with itching but for a totally opposite reason :D Something internal is causing the "black heads". I would look closely at his diet and consider changing foods. I am not satisfied with any kibble on the market so I have started home cooking. Good luck and please keep us posted. |
