Adding a 6 year old Yorkie So not long after we got Wrigley (almost 5 months old now) I started thinking he would love a play mate. This spawned after we took him to the doggie park and I saw him playing with a yorkie there. So I've kind of half way been looking for a breeder selling a female (pet only) for a decently cheap price since it would mean adding double the food/toys/vet bills ect. OR looking for a female yorkie. I've been looking mostly for a female because I'm too out numbered by males here between my husband and Wrigley and our male Leopard Gecko :) So I emailed the breeder I got Wrigley from today just sending him a updated pictures of Wrigley and also to let me know when he has any female pups. So he emailed me back saying that he is looking to rehome Wrigley's Aunt who is 6 years old. He is retiring her from breeding. I was really looking for a yorkie 1 year old or younger, but now I'm curious. What would be the pros/cons of adding a 6 year old female with a 5 month old male. Do you think they would play together? Do 6 year olds typically still have playful energy? I know it will vary per each dog, but does anyone have a yorkie this age or have any experience in this type of situation? |
I think 6 years is kind of young. But we all know that puppies are very playful. I guess you could try putting them together for a little while to see how they are together. :) |
Age difference okay, but maybe she is tired from breeding. Neutered? |
Wrigley isn't currently neutered but will be soon (I'm not ready for him to "go under" just yet) and she would come with the agreement that I would spay her. |
Anyone else? |
Afraid I dont have any real advice to give you, just wanted to give you a reply as I know how hard it is when nobody does! lol ;) I cant see an issue with a six year old, only if you wanted a puppy then you will be missing out on all that comes with a younger dog. I guess you could introduce the two dogs and see how they get on? Sorry I cant be of more help! Let us know what you decide, wont you? Jess :heart to |
I would wait and get a younger dog. My 2 are 4 and really dont play much |
I would ask the breeder about her personality. Regardless of age, some adult females just don't like to play with puppies or adult dogs while others remain active and playful. It all depends on their personality. If they breeder says she likes to play with other dogs then I would definitely think she would adjust well. |
