jack birfffday cake (must read) ok ok ok... so i been planing wat kid of cake to do for his bday!! i have already decided im gonna do a soccer ball (bought the mold and everything) well i was stuck on wat to use for the black parts of the soccer cake. Im not too crazy about using food coloring soooooooo i have decided that i will make the cake white n orange (it is fall after allllll) sooo i will use either sweet potatoes or carrots to frost it with (im a GENIUS) WOOOHOOO WYLIE'S MOM I HOPE U'R READING THIS... LOL ok sooo now i need help on wat i can use to give the illusion of grass around the ball. PLEASE any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. THANK SO MUCH. |
Most cake decorators use green food coloring to tint coconut to create the illusion of "grass". Put the shredded coconut in a bag, add a few drops of green food coloring, and mix it up in the bag. Don't "moosh" it too much or you'll break down the coconut, but that's the way it's done. |
thats a great idea but the thing is that im not too crazy about using food coloring on the cake. I mean maybe if i do that but keep the grass kinda separated that might work right? also, where can i buy that coconut stuff? is there a specific name or something?? ( sorry im so lost wen it comes to shopping for food) :D |
You can get the shredded coconut on the same isle that you get your baking stuff - cake mixes, cookie stuff, etc. It'll come either canned or bagged - usually sweetened. An alternative would be to get some dark leafy vegetable, like maybe kale or even Romaine lettuce, trim all the stems and veins out, then cut the leaves into thin strips to look like grass. |
ohhh u r very right!!! that might be even better for them (not for me cuz i will be chop chop chopping alot lol) but they are soooo worth it. thankssss |
Why not use julienne sliced green beans? |

This might give you the idea. I know Del Monte sells them in a small can. They may be called "French cut". The bean is cut lengthwise several times. So yes, the slicing is done for you! http://www.sacatomato.com/julienne%20%20peeler.jpg |
ur good... where can i get that? nevermind i got it. for some reson before it didnt show the text only the link THANKS |
I'm sorry, that picture is huge. The slices are usually about a 1/4 inch wide though. It would be perfect for your project! |
