Need Advice on Potty Training HELP!! I rescued a yorkie from a bad situation and I am having trouble house breaking the little guy. He is 5 months old and has been nuetered. He was left in a cage all of the time and had no choice but to use it as his restroom. I have followed the advice of a few rescue groups and I have been crate training him first. I have a divider in his crate that only allows him to lay down, stand up and turn around. He is on a schedule and he goes outside every hour but about twice a day he will use the restroom in his crate both urine and BM. I also keep him right next to me either in my lap or on a leash when he is not in his crate. If anyone can tell me what to do to help him I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!!! |
When I was potty training my Yorkie, I placed him in a bigger kennel. I put a pad on one side of his kennel, and he slept on the other side of the kennel. He used the pads to go potty, because he was trained to potty on pads. When he had to use the bathroom in his kennel, then he would go potty on the pad. I used this strategy to prevent my dog from defecating on himself. I was able to potty train my dog by learning when he is most likely to go potty. He always had to go potty ten minutes after eating or playing. |
Like "Lovely" said....after you get him to go potty on the pad....then you can make sure to have a pad outside of the crate area.....and then just slowly move it to the door......so eventually he's going to the door to go potty...and you can eventually remove the pads....still make sure to take him outside to go potty...and always use the same door... We just got a 1 yr. old yorkie that was NOT really trained .....we tried this method and she understood pretty quickly! Good luck..and that's AWESOME that you saved him!!! |
I think crate training is the best way to go. I got Fiona when she was about 3.5 months old, and the only 2 accidents she had, she did on the tiled floor! The best thing for you to do, in my opion, is obviously if your pup is in the crate at night, as soon as you let him out in the am, go outside. You can come up with a command word to help him go potty on command. I would make sure that the word you come up with everyone uses in the house and you gotta be consistant. When your pup is actually doing the act thats when you say your command. In my case, when Fiona would urinate, I would say " Good Pee Pee" and "good poopy" You have to do it while they are in the act, not before, not after, and when they do it praise them, use a high pitch voice, treats, anything so they know they did a good job. If your out there for like 20 min and they do one over the other, put him back in the crate for 15 min, and try it again. :p Good Luck!!!! |
Take him out within a few minutes after eating, playing, sleeping. Also stick to the hourly schedule. (I took Nolee out every 2hrs). Have his last meal of the evening no later than 6. Be sure to take him out just before bedtime. This is the schedule I kept, and thank goodness it worked great! Good Luck!:animal-pa It will happen! |
ps....i would even try pulling water at 7pm so he won't have to urinate as much during night time! |
you've gotten some good advice. We crate trained at first and I was up every 2 hours to let Hot Rod out to potty on pad. Then we got an expen and I was able to put his pad in their with him. We watched him like a hawk and we still had a couple of accidents but not too many. When we figured out his "signals" we were on point and made sure to grab him and place him on the pad and just kept at it until he did his business. We then praised and gave him a treat. The first time he used the pad all by himself, you would have thought we hit the lottery! lol. We praised and praised! Then we noticed that when he woke up, he would poop so we made sure to take him outside as soon as he came out of his crate and so on. Patience, it will happen. |
Thank you all!!! He is doing so much better...Thank all of you for all of the wonderful advice!!! Have a great week!!!:) |
