over tired puppy? Need some advice here So sometimes my friends or family show up and play with the puppy (12wks). They all love the puppy so much. They go out in the yard, run around, play fetch - all around a great time. The odd thing is, i swear the puppy becomes over tired and has a sort of tantrum. She gets so tired she can't sleep, and just isn't her self. I have to take her out of the room and put her in the crate (where she freaks out, which she never does). When she wakes up from her nap though she is right as rain. Am i just reading too much into this? Need some good motherly advice =) |
Hi, Smoop I've been taking my YT to puppy training classes (she's 16 weeks old now). One of the things that the trainer stresses is that puppies should not be over-exercised. The reason for this is that they may be balls of fun, but most of their calorie intake is needed for growth of healthy bones, coat, teeth, etc. If they're over-exercised, they can lack nourishment and end up with problems at a later stage. By all means don't take my word for it - I'm no expert, but our trainer is! (and she's also a vet). She recommends building up exercise a little at a time, starting with maybe 10 or 15 minutes, and then increasing by maybe 5 minutes a day. I got my knuckles sharply rapped because I'd had Lucy in the park, followed by the beach, for almost 2 hours. In addition, at a very practical level, the trainer says that if you start out exercising a puppy for an hour a day when it's young, as it grows, you'll need to increase the amount - perhaps dramatically - which can certainly have a big impact on your life. As much fun as it may seem at the time, NO ONE should be exercised to the point of exhaustion. All reserves are gone, leaving the pup (or human) at an extreme disadvantage. If she were a human baby, it would be called abuse. Playing until she's tired and you know she's going to sleep well is ONE thing; playing with her until exhaustion sets in and her system goes haywire is quite another. Just remind your friends that she's a baby and needs her rest ... ;). If she's like most dogs, she wants to please you and will try to do so until she drops. But it's not good for her, as you've seen. |
