Teddi went to obedience class twice and we used a leash and collar. But we always do. Ceasar says that harnesses are for pulling and that they encourage them to pull and that they give them power. I know most people here use harnesses but I think if you take your dog to training they will learn how to walk properly on a leash and not pull. |
Our trainer made a point to show Hot Rod's harness to everyone in class and that it was the right thing to use on smaller dogs. She also recommended other types of harnesses for other dogs other than collars. I would stay with the harness as we didn't have any issues with using ours in class. |
Hm. I don't know anything about leashes affording you more control over the dog, but when I used a leash on Mocha + Lulu, it didn't give me more "control". But maybe it's just me. I train my dogs using common sense. We don't have obedience classes here in Jakarta, only dog schools, and for that you have to send your dogs to them for 2-3 months. |
I am not sure where even to start with this. A trainer that not concerned about safe training of a dog.. hummm??!!! Second any trainer that thinks a leash is for controling a dog is not a trainer I want near my dog? A leash is a tool to help keep a dog safe. A dog should walk beside you and want to be with you not held there by a leash. A leash is not for control or use as a way to pop it and teach heal. A leash if a trainer knows what she is doing never needs to be tight and should be able to teach a client not to have a dog pulling on a leash every!!!! If this is just basic training for a pet dog tell her to get over her self suck it up and let you train in harmness.. it is your dog and your money and you are not risking your dog ! Now if it for the ring well that dog should already not be walking pullling to be working toward trialing already and if it is go start at the basics and if not then she needs to teach that and it not by leash popping! Second yes if you are heading to the ring you will need a collar but you can train on harness until the pulling stops and switch and proof that. I also check and see I thought you can use a harness on a dog as long as it not a no pull one... I know you can in rally O on dogs. JL |

Your dog is not in the class to be made scared by anyone elses unsocialized problem and she can not manage the dog in the class and keep the other dogs safe then it needs to not be there. Out of control is not safe even if she manages a non attack training session. Or teach the other dogs without fear.. fear and stress is not a good place to learn anything new. You taint the whole bond and learning with stress and fear. You are not getting the training you need or that your dog needs if this is going on and it is not OK. That dog needs privates and a trained aggression person with it in private and with bait dogs and yours is not a bait dog. It not OK she is doing this and you need safe class or your money back now!!!! Do not wait and hope the next class will be better cause your little one will be affected and you need to speak up and protect the both of you. If the trainer says she will not take the dog out you get your money back. JL |

A collar ...choke or flat buckle or harness it makes no difference at all.. AT ALL!!!!! as to if a dog will pull. They will and it because if you pull ,they pull into the pull to balance them self. if you push they push back to balance them self. Go grad a human you know and push, they push back to stay standing... now pull them and they pull back to stay standing. He teaches dogs to pull him around with a harness and a sled dog is taught to pull in harness. Police dogs work in harness as it is much better for them to do so. What power does it give them??? Ok now I singing "I got the power" in my head and I will never get to sleep with all the laughter. He got his science so messed up on this one that I will be laughing for days over this one. Harnesses are being use across the board on all sized dogs to stop the pulling of the neck and to stop neck injuries on all sized dogs and not just for the throat of little dogs. Harnesses are the most humane way to have a dog contend for its safe keeping. Will become the starndard in time for all breeds not in competitive sports. Only problem is coat damage and some harnesses chafe so you have to check them for fit... They cause pulling that the best joke I have heard in ages. heheheheheheheh I know that when one does not know the science behind why things do as they do it easy to drop any old meaning on things but harness cause pulling yeah no he off by million miles. Try lack of training and allowing the dog to do it. I know you where only reapeating what he said but this one he hit so wrong. I am not laughing at you at all in anyway. JL |
From everyones classes and experience, how do you teach a yorkie not to pull when walking? The only puppy classes available to me within an hour drive usually only has big dogs. They don't have enough small dogs to run a class with. So I won't take her to it. |
It's dangerous to use a collar with any small dog and you don't have to do everything just because someone who is teaching obedience tells you to do it. I was told to use a collar on my Bichon in obedience class, too, and I just simply said I don't use a collar with him because it could injure his throat and stuck with it. The trainer didn't argue. I guess I looked and sounded pretty final. If she had insisted, I would have dropped the class and asked for my money back. It's my dog and I'll have to handle anything bad that might happen because of a collar. I think you have more control with a harness because you can exert any pressure you need to without hurting them. You only have more control with a collar because it causes them discomfort and you don't want them to learn things by causing them pain. Bottom line is "my dog, my rules." |
