any1 gotten a yorkie that was 1 year old+ and changed their name successfully?? I am getting my little guy tomorrow and his name is Jack. He is a little over a year old. I am thinking about trying to change it to Dexter. Has anyone else done this before? or do you think it will confuse him? |
Yep! Toby will be 3 at the end of this year. We got him 2 months ago. His name was Radar but my daughter wanted to name him Toby. He will answer to both, but we call him Toby! |
Our min pin Jasper(we are just guessing his age, he had 2 or 3 owners before us) we got him at around age 3. He had been called Joey and also Jimmie, I liked Jasper so I changed it. He doesn't seem to care what we call him as long as we call him and let him jump into our laps for lots of kisses!!:animal-pa |
I received a yorkie when he was 1 1/2 years old and I changed his name successfully.....it only took a few weeks and he started answering to it...... |
Yep my daughter got a 1 yr. old yorkie and we just changed her name...it only took a couple days....and she comes to her new name!! Good luck.. It could take longer...just don't go back to his old name....he'll learn! specially if you put a treat in your hand when you call his name that might help a little too. |
I got Tofu when he was 1 year and 3 months. He is now 2 years and 8 months old. I changed his name right after we got him and it took him a few weeks to respond to that name. We never used his old name after we started calling him by his new one. As long as you keep on calling him that, I am sure he will respond to his name very soon. Good luck with the name change! :animal-pa |
In the past I got a poodle that was 3 years old. I changed her name. She was fine with it. If you think about it, we have many names for our babies. Mine answer to at least 3-4 different names each because of the nicknames I've given them. I think your baby will be fine. Also, my Oliver know his brother Otis by 2 names. Otis and bubby. Every time I ask hime where bubby or Otis is, he knows to look for Otis. |
We changed the names of our adopted babies from Capone to Maximus (6 y.o.) and from Eve to Minnie (1 y.o.) They both don't listen to either name... LOL!!! |
Rrosenberry just adopted a 3-4 year old yorkie from the pound....she never knew the dog's name, but now it's Bella. :) |
Thank you for the advice!! :D I will be picking up Dexter tomorrow! YAYyyy:cheer: (....my mom thinks i should name him Jackson instead) |
I don't know of any dog that wasn't able to learn it's new name. A trick I have heard used it to call them by both names together for a few days (Jack-Dexter) after a few days drop the Jack and just use Dexter. |
ignore this post -- ya beat me to the jack-dexter idea! |
Awwwww I like the name Jack :) LOL Donna |
I think the name Jack is kinda cute....but my friends dog name is Jack and I have been wanting to name the next dog I got Dexter for a while...;) |
When I got Beau, at 9 months, his name was Blue....it sounded close enough and only had one syllable. Maybe you can call him Dex for a while...it kinda sounds like Jack. Congrats on getting a new baby....regardless of the age. |
They feel it in Your Voice I have 3 Yorkies, 1 male Artie and 2 females Abigail and Pom Pom. I am not re-naming them but I do call them by different nicknames. I also call Artie w/c is pronounced Ottie since I got him when we lived in Boston, I call him Boy Boy or my Boy Friend, Abigail I also call her by Mama or Mamacita, I also call Pom Pom, Tiffany Aloha (AKC. Registered name) or Little Girl. My point is they come regardless of what I call them, I even call them in different Languages; Filipino, Spanish & Japanese. Yorkies are very smart and they learn quick. I was Lucky enough to meet a couple that had Yorkies and they told me that they are capable of learning and remembering up to 250 words, another reason why I was impressed by the Breed. I also believe that they feel your energy in your Voice and that's what they respond to. |

my sister adopted a rescue dog that had been called "Babbet" for six years and she wanted to change her name to "Roxy" and as much as they tried she wouldnt respond to it. Even tried combining both the names... |
I got Pixie at 13 months but she looked like a Pixie so we kept it. But with 4 dogs all I have todois call one and all 4 come. I think he will learn his name quickly. Congratulations |
Sure you can. Yorkies are smart |
I ended up rescuing 6 dogs back in June (all Yorkie's but 2) and they are all a few yrs old and have successfully been renamed! |

What she said ^. And Bella even seemed to know her NEW name within in a day or two. I thought it would take longer. |
It's so easy............I changed all my dog's names. Adopting them at six months, 2 years, 2 1/2 years and 4 years old. It's like they've always had the name-----go for it!!! CONGRATULATIONS!! |
We adopted Camden at almost 2 1/2 yrs old and gave her that name! Supposedly her name was Muffin/Muffy, but considering where she came from, I don't think she really had a name. She knows her name is Camden though! We call her Cammy for short, but she generally comes to us even if we are calling the other two! :) |
Name change! Hi, I have a little female yorkie Dixie who is almost 6 months old. When I went and picked her up my twin daughters ended up purchaseing a little male, Teddy, who is two weeks younger from the same breeder. When they were about four months old we adopted a 10 month old little yorkie, Maxie from some people who had lost thier job and could not take care of him anymore. I think there were some other personal problems as well but we are lucky in that he was a $1000.00 pure bred little yorkie who was well taken care of, neutered, utd on all shots, microchipped and a wonderful, loving little dog who has blended so well with our other two. They are like the three little musketeers running all over the back yard, sleep together and play together all day. At first I thought my twin daughters might change his name but then they decided not to and so we did not. He has done wonderfully. I think it is possible to change thier name, my suggestion would be to use his old name maybe together with the new one for awhile and then gradually dropping the old name. Let us know how it works and congragulations to you on your new baby!:) |
