shaving my 4 month old? My little Tia came to me all matted right down to her skin so bad that my groomers said she would have to be shaved? Is there anything else I could do? If she does get shaved will it ruin her hair? |
I got harley when he was 4 months old. The breeder I got him from had given him a bath and he looked great. About 3 weeks later, his puppy hair seemed to be getting really badly matted. My groomer cut his hair real short to get rid of the fine "puppy hair" - he looked kind of funny - his legs looked really long. He's doing great now and his hair is really pretty. I don't really know the answer to your question but thought I would let you know what I did. harley's mom |
Gracie also got VERY matted about a month ago and I really did not want to shave her, so I just cut out the big mats with scissors and now she is fine!!! I also heard that if you cut their hair before 6 mos it will make it more coarse...But i am not sure that is just what I have heard!! |
Sabrina got really matted with stickers. I put her in the bath tub and used childrens detangler on her and just worked real careful and got the mats out and only ended up having to cut one loose. I don't think it affects their coat. It's so hot down here I keep my girl cut short until Sept. then it grows out pretty fast. But I don't show her etc. |
grooming If she is matted to the skin..the kindest thing is to start over..it sounds like the breeder neglected her coat and it may be soft. Buy her a few pretty shirts and wait it out..good luck |
If it's that bad, I would shave and start over. When Baxter was a puppy, his hair would get matted-not very bad, but I took him to get his hair cut and wanted it short. After it grew back out, it was so easy and it doesn't get matted anymore. Puppy hair seems to be much more difficult than adult hair. Baxter's hair is SO EASY. Chloe is having the same problems. She had a few mats, but it wasn't as bad as you mentioned, so I was able to get them out working on them for quite awhile. |

The breeder shaved our Shiloh before I picked him up. I assume because of neglecting his coat. Three months later it has grown in nicely and is very soft. Good luck. |
i had to shave lexi tooo.. the vet said she was so matted,, i tried to comb them out, it hurt her too much... the hair grows back pretty fast dont worry. the only bad thing is, she lost all her baby hair and i miss that... |
When Reagan was small if she got any matts when I put her in the bath I would really work the conditioner into those matts and try to get them out with the conditioner still on. However if its bad I would take Pat and Kim's advice and go ahead with the shave. A couple matts are one thing but a bunch of matts is another. The hair will grow back and that way the pup won't have to sit through all the tugging. |
I sure can sympathize with you on the matts - but since they can be painful for your baby it's much better to start fresh as it will be too hard to get them out if they're THAT close to the skin - good luck - it will grow back just fine and just keep brushing even when it's short and get some cute clothes ...they do get chilly with short hair AND they feel funny after they get cut ! When Chanel had her first puppy cut I laughed alot and then felt bad cause I think I embarrassed her but new shirts were just the solution ~! |
I think I would go with the shave too. It hurts so much to get all those tangles out. |
