Does Playing Tug O War Make Them Aggressive? I was playing with coco in the park with one of her toys and we always play like this tug o war together and coco loves it. She even brings the toy I play with her with and puts it in my lap and if I don't touch it she takes my hand and moves it to touch the toy. Well this lady in the park told me that I should never do that with my dog because it makes them aggressive. Is this true? I have been doing this with her since I got her at 8 weeks old she is now 9 months and is not aggressive AT ALL. As a matter of fact once she bit me by mistake my hand was close to her mouth when I was playing with her toy and she got down real low and did like an army crawl to me and licked my hand. I guess her way of saying sorry. But this game has not made her aggressive. Will this eventually happen? |
We ALWAYS play tug a war with Esme. It's her FAVORITE game. She acts agressive while she is playing making growling noises and everything! But, she is a SWEET little girl. In my experience, playing tug a war doesn't make the dog more aggresive. |
my boys love tug a war its there favorite they play with each other and me no agression here |

I'm glad to know others play this with their dogs. |
This is our babies favorite game.. I would have to say No, it does not make them aggressive.. They sound vicious while we play but that is the only time.. They are little sweeties and just enjoy their play time.. |
No aggression here either and tug of war and fetch are my Coco's fav. game |
It can when it becomes a dominance thing. My weimaraner and a friend's dog used to play together at the park, everything was fine and for over a year we met every single night, then one day my friend brought a rope toy and they started playing tug, at first it was great, looked like they were having fun with it, but after a couple of nights doing this it started to get ugly, one would snarl at the other if he had the rope and then out of nowhere they just went at it and it turned into a big bloody mess, after that we couldn't hangout together because the dogs hated eachother and fought as soon as they would see eachother, it was ugly. I think it just depends on the dog's personality and if it already has aggressive tendancies, both of these dogs were alpha males, so I think it had a lot to do with it. So, from my experience, yes, I think it can under certain circumstances, but I wouldn't worry too much about it with you and Coco playing :) |
My girls play it all the time and neither of them are aggressive...they growl and bark but once we stop playing they stop...but on the other hand my brother's daushand plays this and she will get very aggressive with it...so I think it depends on the personality of the dog that is playing and how you use it to play with them!! |
We play tug-of-war with our small dogs but not with our Rotty. They sometimes bite you when they are playing and a big dog could really do some damage. |
I have read in dog training books that it can make them aggressive and that you should not do it. I think it has to do with, if you give in and let them have the toy, they will feel dominant at that time and it may carry over to other activities. But Rowdy loves it and he is the least aggressive dog I have ever seen. So, I really think it depends on the personality. |
I play tug of war with Schatzie and Annabelle. However I am ALWAYS the last one holding the toy. (sometimes i have to hang on for awhile until they drop it). Letting them keep the toy tells them they are dominating their owner. So, anyways I have read that it's best to be the one who "wins" the toy to teach the pet you are dominate over them. |
I play tug-of-war with Ruby all the time she absolutely loves it but yes I don't think it makes them agressive but after they do tend to play more rough. |

My Gus loves to play tug o war,,,,,, BUT when he is playing with his rope by himself my son will get on all fours and go up to Gus. He will get very aggressive only with my son. Timmy will crawl slowly towards Gus while growling. Gus will snap at him almost everytime. But as far as playing he doesn't get aggressive at all. |
I would have to say no! |
