Good or Bad: Suntanning My Yorkie loves to lay out on the driveway and rest or even in the grass. To me, it looks like he's suntanning. His color has slightly changed in a couple area on his backside from a black to a reddish brown. He's not out there a long time, but is it good for them to be in the sun~? |
My two girls do the same thing, just as a cat would do. I think it is fine and somewhat relaxing for them. As long as they don't stay in the Sun too long and get overheated, which mine never do. Bailey's hair lightened up a bit on the ends, no big deal, she'll get a trim in a few weeks anyway. |
Deegan loves basking in the sun too, but I try to keep on him with using a sun screen made for dogs. Actually I think it's a coat shiner w/ sunscreen. At least I feel like I'm protecting him as much as I can. |
Someone told me differently about this. This woman was selling some doggie covers/coats at a dog expo I went to last weekend. She told me that the sun is bad for the dogs, such as a Yorkie. Their hair is thin and they shouldn't be in the sun without having something she was selling and invented. It is like a doggie coat and some buckle and other velcro. So that is why I was asking. My Yorkshire Terrier isn't out in the sun as much as I am. |
I don't think the sun is bad for them. After all, they are dogs. I actually just wanted to comment that all animals have heat-regulating systems and dogs have them too. This means that if a dog gets too warm, he will lie with his tummy on the cold floor and open his mouth. The chances of a mature dog overheating is very slim... I would venture to say that it would only happen when he has no option of shelter. I think we shouldn't worry too much about our babies... they take care of us, don't they? So they can't be too helpless :) |
Duke loves the sun, he goes outside or sits by the window throughout the day. I don't think it's bad for them the way it is when people lay out like that. |

We are all mammals...we are designed to live with the sun. Unless we have a severe skin condition, I think sun is good. Vit D, anyone? |
Platinum Blonde Yorkie's I think it's just Personal preference? I have 3 Yorkie's and Artie can't stand the Sun, he even refuses to walk when it's too Sunny and Hot. Abigail on the other hand Sun Bathes all the time any chance she gets! She is always out in the Sun, and their Daughter Pom Pom just Sun Bathes b/c Abigail is doing it. But they all turn a Platinum Blonde during the Summer months from the Sun Lightening their Hair so they look different depending on the time of the Year, it's like having 2 sets of different Yorkies. They all have full, long coats and I DO NOT trim them for the Summer. From what I know they don't have an undercoat and they do get Sunburned from extreme sun exposure just like Humans do. Their Hair does protect them from Harmful UV rays to a certain extent, they face all the same Dangers as Humans do from the Sun. So I would say it's Healthy for them in moderation plus it makes them Happy & Relaxed. |
