Rawhide. good or bad? hello, does anyone know if rawhide is ok for yorkies to chew on? i am getting the impression from reading some of the posts that rawhide is not good for yorkies, is this true? is there another thread that discusses whether or not rawhide is good for yorkies? thank you very much! |
Rawhides are hard on there little stomaches. I wouldn't think about giving those to any dogs. We have a larger dog and he has stomach problems when he eats those. We watch everything we give him. |
Yes, rawhides are really bad for them. they are very hard to digest. Try bully braids or sticks they are all natural and my baby loves them. I give him the 12 inch one and he has been chewing on it for a few weeks. I take it away around meal time so he will eat, but he will chew on it and go to something else. I use the really thin raw hide sticks. Our breeder used them. Atticus loves them. When they get to be too small we throw them away. We've never had a problem. I didn't know that they could be bad. Perhaps time to research and reconsider. |

I threw all of ours away because they started getting sick after eating them. I am not sure if the shop I buy from is carrying a different brand or what. Not worth it when there are much better chew products out on the market. I give mine dehydrated chicken breast strips now, they love them. |
I give my yorkie raw hides sometimes. I didn't know they were bad for them though... |
Raw Hides are not 100% digestible, and small parts can cause an intestinal blockage, while this is a very rare occurrence, it does happen, and many of us would prefer not to take the risk. Some companies are making an 100% digestible Raw Hide that is made from raw hide that has been pulverized and then reformed, into the bone shape. This is said to be much safer, however, they are still hard to find, and the vast majority of Raw Hides are make from one piece of hide. I use Merrick Bully sticks, which are 100% digestible, and satisfy the chewing urge as well as help keep teeth clean and gums strong. |

London has never had a problem with rawhide. she loves it and acts perfectly fine. |

There are so many other options out there. Rawhides seem to upset little doggies' tummies (in my experience) and like other posters have said, they are not fully digestible so it could lead to intestinal issues, I think it is because of the way they split off like splinters...don't want that! :eek: I use bones that are fully digestible and have ridges that will help to clean my pups' teeth! I also use a lot of rubber toys with can halp with plaque. |
I give Teddy Pork Chomps, they are digestible baked pork skin. They come in a couple of flavors and he really seems to like the peanut butter ones! |
I never gave Sam rawhide. I have a friend that worked for a vet and she said lots of dogs came in with stomach problems with rawhide. |
As with anything you give them you have to watch them...Rawhide is NOT good to give to ANY dog. They do not digest them and they can get lodged in their intestines. My Parents had a small dog that they USED to give rawhide chews to. One night she had been chewing on one and all of a sudden she ran over to my Dad....she was chocking on it...THANK GOD they were home! My Dad stuck his finger down her throat and got it out...They were very lucky...he could have pushed it down further. I had given Sadie (yorkie) a bullie stick. I had bought the kind that look like a long pig tail...She was on my bed waiting for me to get into bed. She was making a coughing sound I looked and she was chocking!!! THANK GOD she brought it up herself,,we live over an hour away from the nearest ER vet and we never would have made it there in time. So.....with all that said....he don't have ANY chewies in our house. |
