Lifting front paw when staring at cats Hi All, My yorkie lifts her front paw when she is sitting and staring at a cat that this beyond her reach. I'm assuming this is a prey thing. Anyone else's yorkie do this? |

Maybe she is a pointer (Isn't that what those dogs are called?). :p As long as she isn't trying to hurt the cat, I wouldn't worry about it. |
AhHAA! Part Pointer, huh? Both of mine do that when they are in "stealth mode": they freeze in position on full alert, and will sometimes lift a paw, as if to be ready for an instantaneous charge. Unfortunately, they're not much on stealth mode when it comes to squirrels or the neighbor's cat: it's more like a full-tilt-boogey chase, complete with barking like maniacs! I don't know what they'd do if they ever caught one: even the squirrels are bigger than they are! |
Rory Three Paw? 1 Attachment(s) Rory is always standing or sitting with one of her front paws up! We starting calling her Rory "Three Paw." They snapped at this daycare earlier this summer. I guess I could see it being part of her stealth mode, but some of the time she is just standing there with one of the front paws up with no "prey" in (my!) sight. Too funny! :p |
Cassi is a big scaredy cat. She'll run away from other dogs, cats, rabbits and even squirrels... |

Skeeter and Adie both lift a paw when they are intensely looking at something. Usually it is a toy they want you to throw play with. LOL. It is just tooooo cute. |
Bella does this all the time - usually when she wants to play. She will go across the room and look at me. If I put my hand up ("talk to the hand" style) she will go trance-like until one of us moves and then pounces toward me trying to attack my hand. She will do this 2-3 times in a row and usually with the paw up. I try not to do it too often because I don't want to encourage play-biting at all, but it's the cutest darn thing. :animal-pa |

Chloe does that too. She does it with other dogs, cats and birds. She looks like she is going to fetch a duck out of a pond after you take her hunting. |
I've heard that a lifted paw is an invitation to play..... or they're trying to get attention. |
