Bully Sticks - How Long Is Too Long?! So, I finally took the plunge, overcame my fears and got Lilly a bully stick at Petco today. I've always had this huge fear of giving her anything that's shaped like a stick... afraid she'll lodge it into her throat or something. That's how I am though, Miss Worry Wart :D . Anyway, she was terrified of it at first... thought it was a monster or something, haha. She finally started licking on it and was hooked. She layed down and chewed on it for quite a while. My mom said not to give it to her for very long because it could make her mouth get sore and bleed? I don't know, I put it up in a bag and she walked around everywhere trying to find it :(. Around how long should I let her chew on it before I take it away? I accidentally got the 12" one instead of the 7" so I have a feeling it's going to last a while if I keep taking it away. Help! Is there any length it will get to and I need to throw it away? Please help out a bully stick newbie! |
Anyone?! |
The only time I take Callies away from her is when it gets to small about 2 or 3 inches. I think if her mouth got sore she would stop chewing on it and sometimes she will just stop chewing on it and go do other things. I have never noticed Callies gums bleed from chewing on the bully sticks. Chewing on bones help strengthen there teeth. My moms dog never chewed on bones as a puppy and now thats hes older he cant really chew hard things because they will make his gums bleed. |

^I agree  My puppy gets bored after several minutes when chewing on bully sticks and toys. So I have no problem that she will over-eat the bully stick or destroy her toys. My only problem is how to keep her busy for a long time :D |
I don't take Roxies away from her. Once it's hers it's hers. She'll chew on it and leave it then go back and chew some more. It'll last for days sometimes weeks (depending on the size). So it's not like they'll just sit down and chew it untill it's gone. |
Tatum almost always has one laying around. Sometimes we have to take it away so she'll go to sleep but then if it's laying up on the nightstand during the day and she's looking for it, she'll stand there and do her little "beep" thing. Not quite a bark, just a "beep - hey I need help here!!" noise. We get the 6 inch ones and it's perfect length for her to hold in her paws to chew on. We take it away when it's about an inch or a little more long. She has gotten it stuck in the very back of her teeth before when we didn't realize it had gotten that short. We thought she was choking on it but it was just so gooey that it got stuck on a back tooth and she was trying to get it out. So it's best to take it away about that length. |
I prefer the 12" ones and they handle them fine. Loki has successfully polished off a 36" one before and Sammy helped. Loki eats a 6" stick too quickly and then I have to take it away when it's like 2" If I give them 12" sticks I don't have to worry about taking them away so quickly. Also keep in mind there is more to a bully stick than length. The denser, thicker bully sticks last a lot longer than the skinny steer sticks. |

The only reason we don't get 12" ones is because I didn't think she's be able to hold them as easily. May have to try one though. |
We buy the 12" ones for my boys because they chew through the 6" ones in like an hour. I have bigger sized boys (8 and 14 lbs) though. I've never noticed their gums getting sore or bleeding though and they'll chew on their bully sticks for HOURS at a time. |
Yeah, I have a feeling it's going to last for a while. It's really thick and solid, I'd be afraid to give her one that was smaller or not as thick. Are there any thicker solid ones that are 12" that don't smell as bad though? It smells so disgusting  |

I think the right length of stick depends on the dog. Some can chew down a 12" before others get started on a 6". LOL |
I would take it away if you think she may choke on it. If you crate her I wouldn't leave it in there while your away. :aimeeyork |

I also pick sticks up when we leave the house. We are mostly home but if we do leave I collect all the sticks. We've never had a problem but it's better to not worry about it. |
