Over excited yorkie, help! Hi everyone, Humphrey has always been a very friendly little puppy and I think this is one of his best features. He always wants to meet new people, play with children and other dogs... However, he usually gets over excited. If I am walking him on a leash and he sees anyone walking close, he'll start running towards them, standing on two legs, doing little tricks to get their attention. And this happens with EVERY single person he sees. I love my baby's temperament, but sometimes I wish he would just go out for walkies with me and just walk, like most dogs do. Do you guys experience similar over excitedness with your pooches? Humps is 14 weeks and I know its normal for puppies to get excited, but I can't help but wonder if maybe I am just not being good at disciplining him and teaching him to stay calm when people walk by. |
I would say that's a pretty common trait for a Yorkie pup. I know I've battled that over the years. I've had relatively good luck by getting him to focus on his obedience skills. If you can teach him to heel and keep his attention on you (bribing with treats or a toy), you become more interesting than the other dogs. He'll still be distracted, but you can often get his attention right back by offering something more interesting. Treats or toys for a good heel or a good sit. Don't give up! It's possible. |
at 14 weeks he still wants to play with his recent littermates and probably misses them..get another puppy right away:) |
hahaha Cesar I like the way you think. I've been practically begging my husband to adopt another yorkie but he isn't thrilled. |
my Yorkie has the same personality .It's like she is shocked if someone does not want to pet or play with her. Puppy kindergarten class worked wonders - a sit command with a "yes" marker word and a treat will solve your problem. |
My dog has the same personality. He does tricks for attention too. I think he is a very cute and affectionate dog. My dog is about nine months old. He is starting to clam down dramatically. I agree training your dog in basic obedience will teach him to listen to you. Our dogs just think everybody loves them. My dog does all kind of things to get my attention that makes me laugh. This trait makes leaving with my dog so much fun. I glad other Yorkies have this personality, becasue I want another Yorkie. |
