The Groomer and Fleas....grrrrr!!! I am so mad! Oscar got fleas at the last groomer, so we went to the vet and got Revolution. He had his first application on January 11. We went to another groomer on January 24...guess what??? More fleas!!! He has been scratching and I just checked and they are having a convention on him! What does everybody else use for flea control and do your babies get fleas at the groomer...what is up with that? A friend of mine in Memphis, TN says her Bichon gets them at her groomer's as well. Also, my hubby said to spray him with Adams Flea Spray to zap the ones on him now, but with the Revolution, I am afraid it might hurt him...Any help out there??? Oscar's Mom |
i give toby a flea bath twice a week..... i havent used any flea meds yet because i cant really afford it right now..... but i hear sentinal is really good..... as for teh fleas at teh groomers...lol...... where there are animals there are fleas! fleas are at teh vet, the groomers, your pet can even pick them up walking on the street, they are like cocroaches, very resiliant..... oh and dont use bio spot, it doesnt work.... if you like youre groomer, i wouldnt judge them based on the flea poulation because i guarantee you that ANY groomer you take you pet to will have fleas there! |
I would never use bio spot again...I used it on an American Bulldog I had and he had seizures from it. Maybe it is a good product and I had a bad experience, but I won't use it again. I am calling my vet tomorrow...he said that stuff was "guaranteed"...gonna find out exactly what he meant by that. I mean, even if he got fleas while on Revolution, they should have died within a couple of days and it will be a week Monday...they are very much alive. I will continue to use the groomer...she did a good job and I don't want Oscar to hate me because I groom him...LOL Maybe when he is grown and settles down some, I can start grooming him...right now, I am happy with the groomer...but not the fleas...Poor Oscar! |
You can try frontline top spot...they have the topical treatment and a spray also. The spray botle is about $40, so it is actually cheaper. |
I'm having a similar problem, but not as severe. Luna I think is starting to get more fleas obviously because we haven't treated them. She's now 5 months and old enough (I think) to get treated for them. So, I wanted to know...Has anyone used revolutions? I wanted to apply it on Luna but I wanted to ask here first. Also, it's ok to put the whole tube on her if she is only 4lbs? |
Fleas. I despise them. Luca Dean had a flea in his bath water the other day, but the flea was dead. We use Sentinel and he has never had a flea bath or been sprayed. And he goes to vet almost everyday. (I work there). I assume that's where he picked up the flea -- and it died from him being on Sentinel. Ask your vet if you can get the pill that kills the fleas on them within an hour. Then, when you take him to the groomer, give him the pill right before you drop him off. That way, when you pick him up, they will all be dead. When we give "flea baths" at the vet, we give the pill and then bathe them with a gentle oatmeal shampoo -- no flea shampoo. Every dog goes home flealess. (Or maybe with a few dead fleas in their coat.) |
Ick! One good thing about livivg in Montana is that fleas are not much of a problem. We only have 3 months of actual summer, though we still have decent weather for longer then that, but the temps at night drop and I believe kill them. I have never had a dog with fleas. That's not saying I never will, as we have bunnies running around our yard and I hear they carry fleas. It sounds like it is expensive to treat, besides being a nuisance. |

Um, I am not up to date on Revolution, but Capstar is the pill we give at vet. Kills most fleas within 30 min and lasts only about 24 hours. (Same results as a flea dip wihtout harm to the coat). If he only gets them at the groomer's, the Revolution should kill those, but Revolution is a topical treatment (?) and can lose effectiveness during/after baths. How often do you bathe? BTW, the Capstar is really cheap. And a non-prescription item too. If you want to wrap all the treatments into one, you can try Sentinel, also oral, and thus not have to worry about it losing effectiveness. |
Oscar has had one bath since the application on the 11th and they bathed him at the groomer...but the Revolution says baths, even 2 hours after application, won't change the effectiveness of the product. The package states "Revolution should be applied when the pet's haircoat is dry. However, bathing or immersing your pet in water 2 hours after application will not reduce the effectiveness of this treatment". |
i dont know about that brand.............. but bio spot is terrible....... it doesnt work at all, i bathed toby beforehand, put the topical stuff on, and didnt bath him for at least a week so i wouldnt wash it off, but he STILL had fleas ..... lol..... i know this is really gross , but i have LOTS of satisfaction when i give toby a bath (with flea shampoo) and the fleas float off down the drain......... poor guy, hehe, i scrub him hard so all the eggs get off too :o |
Did you treat your house/carpet for fleas? There could be new fleas jumping on Oscar and the revolution just hasn't had time to kill them.. I wouldn't put anything else on him until 30 days have past.. If you bathe him try rinsing with a mixture of 50/50 vinegar/water. Or you can cut up a lemon and boil it for a few minutes and let the water cool and rinse him with that.. Fleas don't like citrus smell. |
OK...talked to my vet this morning about Oscar's fleas. He said that sometimes Revolution takes about two or three months to get in his system. He said to retreat him today with another application of Revolution and that the company would give me a free months supply next time I go to the vet. He also said that Adams Flea Spray is safe to use between monthly applications of Revolution. I asked him about the Capstar and he is going to give me some to give Oscar before he goes to the groomer from now on so we won't have this problem anymore!!! Thanks everybody for all of your suggestions...I just love this board! |
we use revolution. ahia has never seen a flea. buckeye has had 2 or 3 on him since we have had him (about 2 yrs). buckeye has only been groomed once out side of me doing it and that was done at the vets office by a groomer. even when fleas were really bad everywhere last summer we didn't experience any here at home with ours. |
we got fleas from the groomer too. and romeo was on k9 advantix at the time. i'm still pissed. |
You already got some great answers - but to prevent MORE fleas - treat all his bedding and the house too or you may never get rid of the....The Adams is GREAT for that |
As Villette said, you already got some great answers and I agree with her on treating the bedding, blankets, toys, etc. I use Adam's Flea Shampoo on my 2 when the weather starts warming up. Hubby has a second job when he's not working at the fire station doing pest control so he treats the entire yard monthly starting when the weather warms up. We don't treat the inside unless we notice fleas because the chemicals he uses are harmful to the dogs. If we have to treat the house, they go to my mom's for the day. Remember, with fleas, you may kill the flea but you have to watch for the eggs which can hatch in about 10 days. So if you treat your home and the bedding, repeat it a couple weeks later to make sure you've gotten them all. |
flea products do not prevent the fleas from getting on the dog, just kill once they bite them. so they still have the ability to lay eggs, you have to treat everything, bedding included. we use frontline and have no problem with it, we have only had a flea problem once and that was after moving to a new house. we are in the south though and the winter was not that great so fleas are going to be horrible this year........ |
I can't imagine getting fleas from going to the groomer. I work in a dog grooming facility and we see maybe 20-25 dogs per day. Of those we get maybe 2-3 with fleas and those are immediately bathed with flea shampoo. No two dogs ever come in contact with each other. Dogs are housed in stainless steel dog crates with a new clean towel per dog under them and wiped down between dogs. My own two yorkies often come to work with me for the day and neither has ever gotten fleas. I have never used any flea medication on either dog. I would probably use advantage if I needed to but they just never get fleas. I think once a yard or house gets infested it is a hard problem to tackle but so far I haven't had that problem (now ants....I got lots of those!) I have a good friend who's dogs and cats are always getting fleas. I have been in her house and had fleas jump on me from her couch. Her house is clean but apparently she does have a flea infestation issue. Anyway, if your dog is comming home from the groomers with fleas...that's not right and you should talk to them about it. Ask for a tour. Check out the facility and see if maybe they have the dogs in a common area (bad idea) or if they are using dog beds in the crates that could be infested with fleas. One other thing, if you do see a flea on your dog (and remember there is no such thing as just one flea) and don't have a flea shampoo on hand you can wash him in diluted Dawn dishwashing liquid. Just suds him up and let it sit on him for a minute, rinse well and then rewash with your regular shampoo and conditioner. Don't do it all the time because the Dawn detergent tends to dry the skin a bit but it is fine for the occasional flea bath. It works! Be carefull not to get it in the dogs eyes though. |
We have trouble with fleas and ticks. They must be all over the yard from the other animals and the ticks, well, we live in the center of a lot of trees. I use Advantage. I've been really happy with it. Since I've started using it I haven't seen but one flea on Reuger. You apply it to the base of their neck (I make sure that Reugers had a bath so I won't need to give him one and wash out the meds). It lasts a month or so. I just ordered some more this morning, in fact. |
I hate fleas. My dogs use advantage but as soon as it wears off they will get fleas so I have to keep up on it. Chachi is allergic to fleas so even one and he breaks out. |
Used Frontline plus since Rosi was a puppy and never had a problem with fleas ! |
