How do you know if your dog is show quality?
 
How do you know if your Yorkie is show quality? Do you go by what a book says and determine that way? Or does someone have to say you have a show dog like your vet? Who determines if your yorkie is good enough to show? Do you have to buy a Yorkie that has show in the bloodline for the dog to be considered show quality? I do not plan to show amber or to show now. But in the future that is something I would be interested in doing.

I would take her to a local show and see if you can get a judge to tell you if she is good enough to compete. I have a hard time trying to figure out what the standards mean. It is all kind of vague to me. You could also ask a breeder that shows dogs if they would tell you how she measures up.

Good advice..visit a show..at first do not take you dog. Watch and learn..meet a few people, after the showing of course...people are too busy before hand to chat and may appear nasty...of course many are just plain rude to non-exhabitors. Ask a few to look at your puppy...do not take one persons advice as gospel...if you ask a judge, make sure the judge is a breeder judge...or at least has many years of Yorkie juding under their belts.
Even if you are not interested in showing Amber, you can have someone go over her and you will learn from that evaluation..showing is not for the thin skinned. It is a cut throat world and not a sport as in England, but there are many wonderful people, you have to sort them out..like anything else in the world..perhaps you could apply to join a regional canine or Yorkie club..we had several non-showing supporters in our club..best of luck

I was watching a TV show the other day about handlers and people who want to show their dogs. It's a lot of work and money! And handlers don't come cheap, either. Archie's got the perfect color and markings of a yorkie, but he would be more than the requisite 7 lbs. I took him to the vet yesterday and he's 10 lbs. now!!! He was 9lbs a month or so ago.

Best advice I can give is to go to a show or try to locate a show breeder near you and ask if he/she would mentor you..

And of course, be familiar with the standard of the breed. Look at show dogs, but keep in mind, no dog is perfect..one of the job of handlers is hide it's imperfections while emphasizing the qualities.
