How can I get her to jump? lol This may be dumb and stupid to some of yall .. but oh well! Trixie has been with us for almost a month (next week), so we've had her for 3 weeks this week. Anyways, Daphne our pom is all up on stuff, the bed, couch, recliner, and everything. I know it may take some time for her, but I know she can jump, as she plays, and prances outside when we play with her and all.. but she won't jump on the bed or couch or anything yet. We actually pick her up at night when its time for bed to put her up and she stays up there all night caues I think she doesnt wanna jump up herself... Any ideas? or do I just have to wait this out? |
She is probably still to small to be able to jump...I would give her some time to grow a little more...but while you wait you can make a ramp or stack some pillows to have to help her out...Sailor was the same way, it took her several months to be able to figure out the whole jumping thing...we would just help her out in the mean time... |
lol She is full-grown. She's almost 4 years old! (will be 4 on Aug. 26) She is *new* to use though cause we rescued her from a puppy mill! |
She still might be a little young yet. Mine were jumping on the couch by 4 months though. You might stack some pillows for her to climb untill she gets her nerve to jump. |
I think it's probably a good thing she isn't jumping. By not jumping, it is saving on wear and tear on her little joints. Yorkies are prone to leg problems and as much as I get a kick out of seeing Maddie jumping around, I always think that it is hard on her legs and just hope and pray she isn't causing too much stress on her legs. Since you rescued her from a puppy mill, she maybe never had a chance to jump and just doesn't know how. Thank goodness she's in a loving home now and I would bet she will start jumping eventually, but if she never does, at least you can know she'll keep her legs strong and healthy! |
First I would like to commend you for your rescueing Trixie.. What a sad sad life up until then.. Perhaps she will never jump up on those things. 4 years is a long long time to be stuck in a cage. When we got Shiloh he was a year old.. He spent his first year in a cage as well. He didnt know how to play, he didnt jump very well and even looked very awkward when he ran. It took about 2 months for him to start really acting like he was a house pet. Now he doesnt stop. He is always on the go.. He still looks a bit awkward when he is running.. Like he still can not comprehend that his little feet can move that fast.. So he runs in place like a cartoon for a bit.. Good luck with your little one and keep us posted on her progress. |
Wow now I feel stupid...I didn't know that you had rescue her...that is so awesome of you!! I am sure that she is sooo happy to be out of a cage and with loving people... Since she is already 4years I would guess that she may never jump...she may not have the ability and muscles to learn how...I would suggest getting a ramp or stairs of some sort!! |
I would recommend against jumping toy sized dogs. I never worked with my pop about jumping and never controlled it. Now, probably with in a couple more years he will need surgery on one of his knees. It keeps popping out. He came from my champion show pop who was from one of the top, best known lines in the country so I don't feel it was a genetic defect. My vet has also stressed that its the jumping which caused problems. My 10-mos. female yorkie is a terrible jumper and always has been. Even now I can feel her hip and knee popping. Get ramps or steps and teach them to use these rather than jumping. |
Bless you for rescuing this little angel. I've had many rescue dogs over the years and if they come from a puppmill where they've spent years in a cage it will take time for them to develop the muscles required for jumping. She may never jump, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Rescue dogs tend to have delayed development so although she may be 4 years old in age she is but a puppy with much to learn about the real world. Given time she will probably discover that she can jump. I have one little guy who will jump up on the couch but he won't jump down off anything. He's six years old and we've had him for two years. I don't encourage him to jump as it's easier on his joints if he doesn't. |

I would be happy if coco didn't jump. I think she is part kangaroo. That dog can jump HIGH!!! I mean VERY high. So she is sometimes kangaroo, sometimes goat (she eats everything she finds on the floor) and sometimes yorkie. |
Thanks ladies. I didnt mean to come off like I was encouraging her or anything.. I just have never seen her make an effort. The pillows and ramp thing is a good idea, I put some up for now, so hopefully she can catch on there. Iknow we had to do that when Daphne was a baby-as she was under 1lb when we got her and so small so she started out like that too-now she is a bunny! lol Which is not good since she's little too.. but there's no stopping her. Maybe if these steps/pillows/ramps may help Trixie, it will limit the jumping Miss Daphne does as well! |
