Hello All,

My yorkie weighs 2.4 lbs...shes 8 months old and has never been on an airplane before. Any advice on what I can do to make this less traumatic then it has to be. Im flying from Miami FL to Michigan so it wont be a terribly long flight but my little girl isnt going to like the idea of sitting in her bag for that long in a strange enviroment. Do airlines really expect you to keep your dog in a bag under the seat the entire time...I mean it seems really cruel. Anywho any advice you might have would be greatly appreciated by both myself and my little girl Tiffy :)

Yes....you Have to keep the dog under the seat at all times!! At least when i flew jetblue and airtran they reminded me as i put him under the seat. One stewardess on Airtran even made me sit back cause i was leaning over before take off to calm the dog down. She said i needed to "leave an aisle just in case the passenger next to me (MY HUSBAND) had to make an emergency exit.":rolleyes: Pasquale did really well going down to florida....cause it was a direct flight. Coming back he got cranky on the second flight cause we had to stop...and apparently he was done flying LoL

Check with the airline and be sure you meet all of their requirements to fly with a pet. The carrier has to be the right size. You will probably need a certificate from your vet that all of her vacs are current. Yes, you will have to leave her in the carrier under the seat. Get her used to being in the carrier before the flight. You can get something to keep her calm from your vet if you think she will need it. You don't want her barking during the flight. I have flown many times with my Bichon, Lacy, and she gets along fine. I got her used to her Sherpa bag when she was just a puppy and she is happy as long as she's with me. Oh, and remember to wear something pretty. You will get a lot of attention traveling with a cute little furkid!

Start getting her used to the bag NOW;) Put some treats and a comfy blankey and her favorite toy in there and sit it on the floor. She may just realize that it's a nice comfy, safe spot for her to chill out:D

I have always flown with my yorkies. My 5lb Lulu has flown to California with me three times. We flew American and Continental and they were connecting flights for me. She did very well. The last time we flew, once the plane was in the air she slept on my lap and no one said anything to me.

I also took my 3lb. to NY (again connecting flights) she cried for awhile, they would not let me take her out of her bag, so once the plane was in the air I put her bag on my lap and she was fine. Good luck

I think the word "cruel" is a bit strong, don't you think? I have taken Ranger on several flights and as he loves his bag, he has not had one problem. I take him out in between flights and put him in his bag right before loading. I have had flights where I was able to take him out, and had flights where he has had to stay on the floor. If you act calm about it, your pup will read off you, but if you're freaked than chances are so will he. Make sure you do all your reseverations over the telephone and follow all the rules. My yorkie Cutie, is about 4 lbs and I have flown her from Florida to NYC many times. She doesnt like the bag when she is just sits on the regular floor. But because of the vibrations of the plane she doesnt cry and i was so excited because her first plane trip was when she was 4 years old. I did have her on my lap for one of the trips and no one ever said a thing. She wasnt barking she was just sleeping and looking out the window. I used to have pictures of her looking out and you could see the clouds. Cutie likes to be under blankets so that was a plus.
