I finally got a Yorkie!!!! Hi guys! As you all know, I have been looking for a Yorkie for several months. Well I finally am getting my very own on Saturday (which happens to be my birthday)! Last night, I was up at 3:30 a.m. and I was checking Craigslist, and there was an ad that was posted to adopt a 2-year-old Yorkie. I emailed her right away. She received about 40 emails in 12 hours, and mine kept sticking out and felt right to her. I talked to her tonight for about 40 minutes, and she agreed to let me be his new mommy! I am soooo happy! I haven't been this happy in months! I will be picking him up Saturday. She is giving me to him for free, since he needs a vet visit and shots. He is coming with his kennel, leash, papers, microchipped, etc. I just have a few questions. I have been reading up and I saw Yorkies don't eat all that much. So the food they need to eat, needs to be high in nutrients. I was wondering what food would be best to feed a 2 year old Yorkie. If you could suggest a couple brands that would be best. Also, what treats are best for them? I was also reading that a sour apple spray should be bought so they don't chew up your furniture, etc. Has anyone used it? And what is their experience for it? I am not sure I want to use it. I don't know how safe it is. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks and I will post pics asap! Keri :animal36:animal-pa:):):):) |
Congrats on getting your first Yorkie. For treats and foods, I would suggest getting some from the lady you are picking the dog up from. Don't change the food immediately, the dog will have enough changes to the schedule and routine from the previous home. Welcome from YT. Can't wait to see pictures. |
Congrats!! how exiting!! I agree that you should drf NOT change his food staright away, he is going to have MAJOR changes and the food change will make him sick.. Let him adjust for a week or so and if you don't like the food his previous owner(s) have him on you can change it little by little over time.. I wouldn't make any changes to his diet whatsoever for at least a week or two... Again, congrats!! This is a VERY special breed!! And welcome to YT!! |
Congratulationa and... Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Congrats on your new Yorkie. Enjoy your new Yorkie, I can't wait to see Pics.... I use Royal Canin # # 27 for adult dogs. I wouldn't change his food right away. Do it slowly over a couple of weeks. Mixing what he's on now and the new food you choose!! Good-Luck to you both...Blessings, :aimeeyork Baron's Mom |
Aww congrats on your new baby. For food I use Natures Variety (after suggestions from other YTers)I switched from Eukaneuba, but for sure, just like the others said, don't make major changes in the diet right away! :) |
congrats! can't wait to see pics!:animal36 I would defintely stock up on bully sticks to keep your new one busy! My Ted loves any of the Merrick dog treats. I feed my Ted Evo which is grain free. The apple bitter spray didn't work for me but have worked for others so you might as well try it! |
AWWWWWW how cool thats how I got mine. |
Congratualtions! I hope all goes well with your new baby:) What's his name? Can't wait to see some pics! Also, happy birthday for Saturday...what a great pressie!:Dxxx |
Hi! Congratulations and Happy Birthday as well!! You must be a bundle of excitement over THIS Birthday gift!! I feed both of mine Wellness Super5mix, it is Whitefish and sweet potatoe. They love it and are doing well on it. Like everyone has said, dont do the switch to anything right away. As far as the spray, by two years i wouldnt think you would need it. My Oliver is just about 2 and he doesnt chew on anything but his toys. (but then i guess that it is all in how they have been trained) Did she tell you that this one is a chewer? Bully sticks are the greatest thing and they all seem to love them!! Anyway, cant wait to see pictures! Good luck tomorrow!:D |
Congrats on your new bouncing boy!! What are you going to name him??? Can't wait to see photos when you get him!! :bigbdaypa:bigbdaypa:bigbdaypa |
I wouldn't change his food just yet, but definitely start to look for good quality brands (if he isn't already eating something good). Same with treats, get good healthy stuff. (NO GREENIES and NO RAW HIDES or PIGS EARS) they are dangerous - Bully Sticks are good  Make sure you get him neutered (if he isn't already). And at age 2 - he shouldn't be a chewer any more, so I do not think there is a need for the biter apple spray. Just take one day at a time, and love him very much, he is going to be scared and confused, as he has been in his current home for the last 2 yrs :( Can't wait to hear all about him and see some pics :p |
How exciting. I am so happy you found a little guy to love. Boy's are such Momma's boy's. You have been given so much good advise I won't add any but wanted to wish you lot's of years of happiness together. |
Congratulations and Happy Birthday!!! As others have said, I wouldn't change his diet for at least a week or until he gets used to his new surroundings. After that, you have to do it gradually. The spray you are referring to is called "Bitter Apple". I've used it, and I had good luck with it. I'm with mine all the time, so when I would see them start to chew on something, I would spray a little on what they were chewing. It stopped them from ever chewing on the furniture, etc. My boys used to try to chew my socks on my feet, so I would spray a little on my socks. I was able to break that habit really quick, as they didn't like the Bitter Apple. You may not have a chewing problem since yours is a little older. Just be sure to provide lots of bully sticks and chew toys to keep him busy. I wish you the best of luck, and I hope you enjoy your new yorkie! |
congrats on your new baby...can't wait to see pictures...and also Happy Early Birthday! |
Yep, you wont want to change his food for a couple of weeks. What I did with Sadie was I slowly started mixing the food the breeder gave me with the food I wanted to feed her so that she acquired a taste for the new food easier and slower. Eventually I quit using her old brand and kept her on what she is on now - Wellness Puppy. She loves it. Congrats on your new family member and Happy Birthday!! |
