new mom need some help 3 Attachment(s) I am new mom to my yorkie. i got my little guy 2 weeks ago, he's name is Nemo. he is Somthing..... i Love him soooooooo much.and want the best for him. he is super tiny only 2.2 lbs. I got him on findpuppy.com to be totaly honest i was serching for a little one. after looking at many dogs. i do have to admit he's photo had me head over heels in no time. i have to be cerful at al times, no room for acccidents with this little guy. and i got and adult so i would not have any surprises with the size later on. He is 1year and 4 month old . i want him to gain a little waight before i would get him fix. i would never use him for breeding. sadly because of he's size he was use for breeding, so he is marking away every chance he get. i was told he was paper traind but was lied to. i am sort of glad the lady was not honest about that part, because i might have not goten him for that matter. i put a bally wrap on him and that solve the problem. he still lift he's leg to mark every chance he get. thank god for the wrap invention. how often should i give him a bath ?? another thing he is super picky eater, and likes me to hand feed him, the hand feeding is ok with me. I just want him to gain some waight. i can feel he's ribs, he is a little to skiny. i try to feed him 3 times a day. what is the best food for yorkies. he was given table food before i had him, he likes chicken and egs, would it be ok if i give that to him. i did take him to the vet and was told that he was under waight. The pictures of Nemo next to the soda can is the one that was on findpupy.com after seen he's face i could not resist. |
Welcome to YT! What a sweetie you have and so cute! I also love the belly bands fo rthe males! Saves my carpet! |
aww what a cutie and congrats! you should bathe him once a week if needed sometimes my coco can go longer, i think a good food is authority harvest baked wich is what i use for my coco because it is all natural. it is petsmart brand.i would leave food out for him 24/7 i do it for my coco and i'm sure that your baby will enjoy it and maybe learn to just go eat when he wants to instead of waiting for you to hand feed him. sounds like he wasn't taken care of very well from the person you got him from :( also do not give him table food it is really bad and with him being sooo small his chances of getting sick from table food is greater. i'm glad that you have him now and that your concerned about his well being  |
Welcome, Nemo is very cute. He has eyes just like my Gus'. I give Gus a bath once a week but every dog is different, Nemo may not need one as often. As for food, I like Merrick, Flint River Ranch, Solid Gold or Innova. Since he is used to eating chicken it might be hard to get him to eat just dog food. You might want to get some Nutrical since he is so small. It's good to have on hand in case his blood sugar gets too low. |
Welcome to YT. I would slowly introduce him to some good dog food by mixing a little in with his chicken and eggs until he gets use to the taste. Believe me when he gets hungry he'll start to eat both, and then gradually you can switch him off just chicken & eggs. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Nemo is adorable and sounds like you are such a good loving owner to him and only want the best. |
Welcome to YT, Nemo is gorgeous! |
Hi and welcome to YT . Just curious , why peoples want 2.2 lbs adult Yorkies if it is for him to gain weight ? |
Wow! He is tiny (and so cute!) Welcome to YT! I have 1 yorkie- Olivia, who will be 6 months this week. I bathe her once a week. You'll be able to tell when your yorkie needs a bath by their coat- it will start to look a little greasy. I've heard that cooked eggs and chicken are okay for yorkies. However, since your baby is so tiny, I don't know if that changes things. I give Olivia chicken as a treat everyone once in a while. I would definitely recommend free-feeding Nemo. If you want to be sure he's eating for the first couple of days, you could leave food down for him and hand feed him as well. I feed Olivia Natural Balance; she loves it. If Nemo's structure is that of a 2.2 lb. dog, I would say you don't want him to gain weight just to get him fixed. You want to be able to feel a dog's ribs- if you can't, that means they're overweight. If he's underweight, as your vet said, I would find a high-calorie food and switch him to that for a while. I know puppy food is high-calorie, but I'm not sure if it's okay to give that to an older dog. The leg-lifting is probably just because he is not nuetered- it doesn't necessarily mean he was used for breeding. I vaguely remember hearing the minimum age from AKC is more like 17 months for a stud, but I may be wrong. Definitely get a belly-band. We have many wonderful members here that will be able to give you much more information. Congratulations on your new little guy! |
Welcome and congrats on Nemo! I have a 1.5 year old female, Tatum. You know, I would think that if your vet agrees that he's a bit underweight, he would have an idea of what to recommend to get him chunked up a little. As my poodle that I previously had got older and had heart issues, he lost weight and needed to be beefed back up. The vet put him on a specific Science Diet prescription food that helped a lot. I don't personally recommend Science Diet because there a lot better ones out there but in your case, our recommendations might not be what you need. Tatum eats Innova but has only been on it a couple months. She loves it but still... not sure what you need to feed yours. I would ask the vet if there's a prescription one that he recommends that is maybe higher in calories or whatever Nemo is needing. Good luck with him... he looks like a sweetie! |
Hi Welcome to YT! my name is Alyson congrats on Nemo! you,r babby is sooo cute! |
What a little cutie you have! I have a really little female yorkie (Jasmine)... she goes up and down from 2 pounds to 2 pounds,4 ounces.... When I got her two months ago she was only 1 pound 11 ounces (she is 9 1/2 months old now)..... I put some weight on her using a syringe with yogurt and sometimes turkey baby food... until she got the idea that she was supposed to be eating... now she's a little piggy. Good luck with him!!! |
He's a little darling. Ask your vet to recommend a specific diet that will beef him up a little but be careful not to take him from under weight to over weight. A couple of ounces can make a big difference in a little one. As for his diet I'd eliminate the eggs, chicken and rice is a pretty safe diet but he really needs a more balanced dog food which includes veggies. Whatever you do approach it slowly, their little systems can only handle very small changes. Good luck with your little darling. |
Welcome to yorkietalk! What a cutie you have! :) |

oh by the way welcome to yorkie talk. you sure do have a little cutie on your hands. i hope all your questions get answered. |
Welcome YT and congrats on your new addition. My Rocky is a small guy 3.9 pounds and there is no fat on him..I call him my little sprinter. I do free feed Rocky Nutro Small Chunks (Petsmart). While I'm making dinner the aroma has him in a frenzie..So I always have raw baby sweet carrots on hand. I can feel Rocky's ribs but he is just a lean small guy. Rocky will never be a rolo no matter how much he eats. ;-) No matter what good quality food you choose if you find he is not taking to it..Try mixing 1 tsp of the matching wet canned dog food with the dry to get him started. Let us know how it works for you. |
Forgot to mention I free feed..So his food is always available to him 24x7. |
my Nemo is going to get fixed next week, is it to soon ? I was told by the vet to try a/d Hill's Prescription Diet. he does not like it at all. I can't do the free feeding i have a chihuahua that over eat. i did find some soft dog food that he likes. been feeding him 3 times a day for the last few weeks. after taking to the vet today i was not to happy to see that he did not gain any waight. the vet recomend doing the surgery to get him fixed by next week, she told me that would help with the waight. i did some reeding about the gas that they use to put him under, they use the good kind. ohhh by the way the lady that sold him to me only had him for 2 month. I think she did not want him because he is not potty traind. the belly wrap help with one thing, but as farr as number 2 he goes where ever. i try to keep my eye on him it's realy hard he only goes one time in 24 hours. and it is never at the same time. it is going to take some work because of he's age. i would like to thank every one for all the replys. Welcome to YT! Your little Nemo is sooo cute! So little and tiny. My little guys was 2.5lbs when I first brought him home. I can hardly remember how small that was. Hope see you around the site! Take care and yes, try and beef that baby up! |
Hi: You've got a tiny one, for sure. I wish you could send him to me - my husband can put weight on anything/anyone including me. His favorite trick is adding some turkey baby food to whatever he's feeding puppies - they seem to love the flavor. I have to admit to being really curious what you paid for him. I know very tiny puppies can go for a lot, but I've never heard what is charged for an adult that is small. I've often wondered why more people who want tiny adults don't buy them as adults so they know how big they are. Anyway, if you're comfortable sharing the price, I'm sure I'm not the only one who is curious. Good luck with your precious one. CJ |
I have a very tiny rescue girl that I put weight on with Innova Small Bites. Since she was so starved, she wasn't picky, just happy to get any food. I think she survived mostly by eating poop. She is now just under two pounds, and about 2 years old. I don't even think of her as tiny anymore cause she is such a tough little girl--keeps up with my bigger boys without a problem. Good luck with your tiny littly one-he is adorable! |
