Stubborn Walker Hi Everyone. We are new to YorkieTalk, and have loved reading about all your beautiful babies! My 5 month old is a perfectly behaved dog, but he is on this kick where on our walks he sits down or lies on the ground. He is very stubborn and refuses to keep walking! I don't want to break his spirit and want to sweetly be patient for him to continue on, but I am at a loss for how to coax him into it. Nothing sets it off (other dogs, people, etc). Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks!!! |

Fiona just turned 6 months old yesterday, she used to do that all the time, where she would literally jump up, or just lay down- i would pick her up, and then make her walk again- are you using a harness? that helps out too |
I am using a harness. I try and just lean him into going forward and encourage him on, but he will literally lay down on the sidewalk! Did Fiona grow out of it? |

Long line him and make it a game for a while of catch your Mom. Treat and only the best under his nose and lure him a long and feed and go and then waen off the treats. JL |
Mine use to do that too...but then i started bringing one of his favorite squeek toys with him (that i would hold), and when he would sit and stop..id squeek it in front of him while giving a little tug with his leash. He'd get up right away and start walking towards it. Now i dont need to carry it anymore cause he NEVER stops! |
One of mine used to do that, I think it's just a stage they go through. Like a 2 year old. I don't have any suggestions on how to get her over it, but I think in time she will get over it on her own. |
We are just about ready to start taking bowie for walks, im a little scared that he will freak out. For some reason i dont remeber how we got ava to love walks. |
Katy Lou was the same way at first. In puppy obedience class the trainer said to try walking behind her and nudging her (gently) with your feet to get her going. Once she moves on a regular basis let her lead you around then later you can teach her to walk properly. Katy wears a harness. These little dogs should not wear collars their neck is too delicate. Katy does great now and is starting to get the hang of it. She is 5 1/2 months old. |
Tucker loves to walk and will go forever but Ryder just flops down and refuses to move too ! they are walked on a harness but it didn't make much difference . We think Ryder is just lazy :D |
