Lots of Stairs - Good or Bad? Is it good for yorkies to climbs lots of stairs or is it bad for their knees? My baby is on the small side. She is almost 7 months old, and 2.7 lbs. (Not sure if their size make a difference or not.) She is always running up and down the stairs in my house. (we have 3 flights of stairs in the house) If it's not good for her knees, i rather pick her up when going up and down stairs instead of having her run up and down it all the time. (I don't want her to have knee problems) Anyone know? Thank you :) |

I put a babygate on the stairs so he's always on the floor i'm on...i always want to make sure i have an eye on him. He's sneaky and well...i dont trust him lol |
I have a full flight of stairs, and I never gave a thought to it hurting their joints in any way. Wouldn't it just strengthen them? |
We are about to have a rug installed on our stairs so that Elvis can go down them without slipping. Right now they're finished wood stairs. Also, my granddog, Harley, has always gone up and down stairs for eight years now and he is sooo muscular that even the vet is amazed at him, ha! |
so it's ok? so it's ok for them to climb stairs a lot? I was wondering, because usually people with bad knees shouldn't climb stair too often. And since I've heard that it's common for yorkies to have knee problems, I was wondering if it's the same for them as well. would make sense. |
my sense is that, as with humans, intrinsic bone and joint problems manifest later in life. with such a small, young puppy, my concern would not be from the repetitive strain of him going up and down stairs. rather, the one time that he slips on something, or trips in his puppy eagerness, could result in serious, if not fatal injury. I think while you are not supervising, the stairs should be gated. When you are around, it seems like enjoyable exercise for him. Just my 2 cents |

My Pixie is a little one and she is not allowed use ours stairs at all for fear of her falling down them..we carry her up and down them and have them blocked off. |
When Lil' Miss Izzie was a puppy I wouldn't let her use the stairs (mine are open) for fear of her falling through them...now she is bigger and takes the stairs with no problem..I just sometimes have to remind her to slow down.... |
