Need your help!! Hi, I am new to YT, but I want to know if I am the only one who is worried about getting my dog spayed. She is going on 9 months old and weighs 3.5 lbs. I am worried about the anesthesia. Someone told me there was a blood test you could have done to make sure they can handle the anesthesia. Has anyone else had this test done? I do not want to put her at risk, but I want to do what is best for her at the same time. My vet recommended that maybe we wait until she is 1 year old due to her size. Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks!:) |
Hi. I think everyone worries about this. I worried with Gypsy but she came through just fine and she was around 3-4 lbs. Having our chi done Oct 1st and will be a complete wreck the whole day. Talk to your vet about any concerns. |
Harley was neutered at 8mths and weighed 4lbs..i did have the blood test done prior to surgery to make sure he would be ok with the anaesthetic,he came through with flying colors..of course i was a nervous wreck the whole day!!Good luck it will be fine. |

When you all say blood test, are you talking about the typical blood work before, to check the CBC, WBC, all that fun stuff!? thats what we did at the vets, didnt know if there was something different I should know about.....:confused: |
I am a wreck every tme I have to have one spayed. I always have the preanesthesis bloodwork done. Roxie was just spayed and she is 4 lbs and Pixie was spayed at 3.5 lbs. Your baby should do fine. |
Yes!! Get the pre bloodwork done. It made me feel better about the whole process. Mia was spayed at 7 months and she weighed 3 pounds. I was worried sick!!!! She was completely fine. I took her home that night, and by the next day she was feeling 10x better. Not only was she spayed, she was also microchipped, and had teeth extracted. You might already know this but just to be sure... take a look in her mouth and make sure she has lost all of her baby teeth. If she hasn't, this can cause dental problems down the road. The best time for them to be extracted is while under the anesthesia because you don't want to have to do it twice! |
Thanks everyone! Thanks everyone, it makes me feel better that I am not the only "over protective" mom out here! I believe she has lost almost all of her teeth, so hopefully we will not have to deal with that end of it. Thanks for the heads up! |
