Is it just me, or are yorkies really smart!? Fiona is my first ever yorkie- and boy! let me tell you, she is one smarty pants! Our daily routine consists of my boyfriend getting up anywhere between 6-630am, which causes her to get up, and asks me to take her out. So, I take her out, she does her thing, then I'll bring her back in, get her fresh food, water, and cheerios, and we just hang out until I gotta leave for work at 730am. Fiona is crate trained- so obviously when we aren't home she is in her crate- which is nice and comfy with 2 fleece blankets and a little bed! (so spoiled) Well, when I'm all ready to leave, I will get her KONG toy, and start putting her food and cherrios in it, so she has something to eat during the day, well, yesterday, I was re-folding her blanket in the crate, and started loading up her KONG, well, she jumped right in. So, this morning, I was putting in her food in the KONG and she just jumped right in that crate! I swear, she is so smart!!!! :) I was very impressed! So, whoever says yorkies are just stupid small dogs, I will have to def. stick up for them now! :aimeeyork:animal-pa |
i demand pictures of this comfy crate! :D I agree though, Diane at 9 weeks seems really bright. :animal-pa |
I guess anybody who ever had a Yorkie will doubt their intelligence! We had several different breeds but the Yorkies beat them all hands down. The most stupid one we had was an Afghan Hound... poor guy... couldn't remember where he had his bowl from one day to the other and no... his name wasn't Alzie... :D |

4 Attachment(s) ok, here are some of her fav. sleeping places..... |
I always knew Yorkies were smart, but it wasn't until I had one that I realized how smart they really were. |

Chachi is my smart one and he does alot of things that tell me he is a smarty. Today was bath day and I gave Jewels her bath first. When I went to get chachi he was no where to be found. He was hiding because he knew he was next. |
me and my husband both swear that our two yorkies know exactly what we are saying. the dumbest dog we ever had was a Husky, he was so frustrating. |

yeah, as much as i used to love huskies...just listening to them howl...oh dear...i couldnt deal with that! |
They are definitely smart little buggers! I'm always amazed at the number of words that Gus has learned and the little things he picks up on. I never really had a dumb dog, but Gus is probably the smartest of the three. |
I find it scary just how smart these little one's are;) Living with Buddy is like having a room mate who bosses me around on a daily basis. |

Yes, Yorkies typically are very smart! |
Back in my work-away-from-home days, Baxter would do that too. I would look for him, and turn around and find him sitting patiently already inside his kennel. He actually preferred his kennel to being shut up in the bathroom with the kennel door left open..I think it made him feel more secure...I left the TV on. He is still my smarty pants...when I accidentally close the inside door where Cooper can't come in thru the Doggie Door, he will go to the door and bark, and then come to us and Bark..Cooper will just stand there and wait for us...he won't even scratch. The same thing when our infant nephew is here, if baby cries he can't stand it...he will find us and bark, the run back and sit beside baby until we come check him out.;) He also barks at his food and water bowl when he is out of either. I know he has a million human words that he just wishes he could speak. Cooper is not as intelligent, but is 3x as "lovey" as Baxter...which is just as special to me. Darcy is a Princess, and I get the sense that she is annoyed with all of us at times :) |
I didnt realize how smart they were until I got my second! We have had Lilly for a month now and in the beginning, we had her in a pen, with a crate inside. Each day, she ended up outside the pen along with my other yorkie who was free to roam around. When it was 3 days in a row that she was out (and after having accused my cleaning lady of letting her out) we realized she was CLIMBING out. Mind you, the pen is over 3ft tall and she is 6 INCHES tall on all 4s. Anyway, we figured out(from evidence we planted and tapes we had running!) that she was climbing UP the crate to the top, and jumping OVER the pen wall onto the STEP of our elliptical machine, then RIDING the step down to the ground. For that much work, we decided she earned the right to be out of her pen all day! :) |
Smarties Pants they are!!! Pongo is 14,so I thought he would teach Aiden (7 mo old) the ropes. It's the other way around. Aiden barks to go in and out. Aiden knocks over the water bowl if empty. Aiden fluffs up his blanket before laying on it. Aiden hides his favorite things. Pongo has learned all his tricks:D |

I know I* am going to get it for posting this, but it seems to me that they are smarter than other dogs, because they get more attention than other dogs. My shih tzue was as smart as my yorkie, because he was the only dog in an nonchild environment. the constant habitation with humans is what make them smart. high %attention= high %100. I read something about this in reference to an only child when I was in school back home. |
I had a Sheltie (Fussie) :rip: who was extremely smart...you could spell out the word "Sit" for her and she would sit....spell the word "Lay" and she would lay...but Lil' Miss Izzie surpasses her in intelligence....with "Fussie" it took a while to train her, but Lil' Miss Izzie seems to pick up commands right away....I can tell her to get a specific toy and she knows exactly where she left it last and will bring it to me...and teaching her new tricks she catches on quickly also...As much as I loved my Sheltie and she will always be in my heart, Lil Miss Izzie is much more smarter than she was.... RIP Fussie....Mommie still Loves U and Always Will :angel2dl::rbyorkie: |
Tia my shih tzu cross is clueless most of the time ( you got to love her though !) Remy on the other hand ....well! her mind is always thinking. Remy watched me snacking on some dry garlic ribs at the computer one day , she then ran to the door and rang the poochie bells to go outside, so I get up and go to the door to let her out.So as I'm opening the door she runs back into the computer room jumped up on the chair and grabbed a rib off the plate .Fortunately I caught her in the hallway with the rib in her mouth and got it away from her ! Sneeky little bugger! Eileen |
I don't have a Yorkie, I have a Morkie, so she's half Yorkie. She's potty trained at 12 weeks and I never did anything except put the Potty Patch in the corner of the room, with a Nature's Miracle pad in the 'catch tray' for the absorption and scent. She waltzed right over to it, hopped on it, peed, stepped off, and went about her playtime like it was no big thing. I praised her lavishly..but she just looked at me like I was insane. She tilted her head as if to say, "what's the big deal, Mom?" ...she's been using it ever since for poopy and teetee both. I still praise her, and she still looks at me funny. =/ She learned how to sit and lay down in the same day, without treats. O_o I can't get her to sit still for hair bows, but that will come gradually (I hope). In any case, I just wanted to add that I agree, Yorkies are smart (so are Morkies) |
I always saw small dogs as yappy as a kid when I was little since thats how they were portrayed in cartoons, but over the 7 years with Reeses, I realized how smart they are! Living in a bilingual household, this dog can quickly switch his mind from English to Spanish and vise versa! When we speak Spanish, we speak it very fast and he' s learned to understand it, he understands entire sentences in both languages, it never ceases to amaze me! I'm glad my first dog was a yorkie, my parents made an excellent choice!:aimeeyork |
