Drinking enough water... This may sound odd, but I think Louie should be drinking more water than he does. When it was warmer, he seemed to drink more. I sometimes pick up his water bowl and try to get him to take a few drinks but that doesn't always work. How much does your Yorkie drink and do you know if there is anything healthy I can put in his water to make him drink more? |
As long as there is fresh water Mia goes through spurts too where she does not drink as much. My vet just said to have fresh water available at all times. I have friends who use ice cubes you could try that |
Thank you. I do have fresh water out but I will try ice cubes also. |
My gang does not like chlorine and will not drink city water so when in town we have filtered water. We have trouble when we travel we have used tuna juice in the water just a little to encourage drinking. also depending on the size of the dog they tinier they are the less they do need. JL |
I recently switched Meeko's food from Canidae to Wellness Core, which caused him to drink more water. I have a waterer that holds 2 quarts (8 cups) of water. When he was eating Canidae 2 quarts lasted me a week, so a little over a cup a day. Now, on Wellness Core, 2 quarts lasts 6 days, which is about 1 1/3 cups of water a day. I should add that Meeko is a teapot, weighing in at about 10 lbs. If your baby is smaller than he won't drink that much. I would measure out a 1/2 cup of water in the morning and see if he finishes it by bedtime. If he doesn't than measure whats left. If he finishes it, I'd add 1/4 cup at a time for the rest of the night. Do this for about a week and see how much he's drinking. This way you and your vet can discuss if he's getting the right amount. It may also depend on what kind of food he's on and how much he's eating. If you're feeding him dry kibble, than he would be drinking more than if he was on a homecooked or raw diet. This is because kibble is dehydrated, all the moisture is sucked out of the food, during processing. So, he's drinking more as he eats to make up for that. Where as a homecooked diet isn't dehydrated and he'd be getting water from his meals. Another thing that would add to the amout of water he's drinking is how active he is. If he's a puppy and very active, he'd drink more. That's why I suggest measuring his water for a week. Some days he may play more and drink more water. When my boyfriend is around, Meeko knows that means tons of play time, and I know that means he'll be at the waterer at the end of their play session. :p Good luck! :aimeeyork :D I remember you posted last month about going back to work and worrying about your Louie. Just wondering how he's doing while your gone? I'd love to see a picture of the little guy! ;) Oh I should add that Meeko doesn't drink or eat when I'm gone at school. He has bad separation anxiety and just lays by the crate door till I come home. So Louie might be the same, a little sad that you're gone and doesn't wanna drink? |
Our dog trainer told us puppies/dogs should drink an ounce per lb of weight. So if your puppy weighs 3 pounds the should be drinking 3 ounces. This made me feel much better as I too was worried my 10 week old puppy wasn't drinking enough water. |
When I first brought Fiona home, all she would do was drink! Now that she is a bit older, I have noticed that she does not drink a lot. We do not give her tap water, but we do give her fresh bottled water. You want to be cautious though if your dog is drinking an excessive amount of water, it can be a sign of diebites or cushings disease. |
Maybe one of those water fountians for dogs would get him drinking more water? I got Callie one a long time ago because she likes drinking ruining water and it seems like she drinks more then she used to when she just had water in a bowl they can be expensive but it was worth it for us. |

Just curious, do you leave your water fountain on 24/7? Hubby and I worry it might caught on fire if runs too long? |

Thank you all for your advice! I am going to try and measure his water. He is almost 5 lbs. so hopefully he'll drink around 5 oz. Thanks silyjillie for remembering and asking about Louie. It still makes me so sad to know he's lonely :( He still seems to be barking, but not as much as he used to (our neighbors tell us, but they are very understanding as they are small dog owners also). But now he is playing with his potty pads. When my boyfriend comes home, they are not shredded, but they are flipped over and/or in a ball (which you can imagine what happens when he has #2!! I thought about taping them to the floor but I'm not sure if he'll try to pull and then start shredding them. Im crossing my fingers he'll stop soon, but not sure how what else to do. Oh yeah, I tried posting a picture in the avatar, but the file was too big. I need to try and figure that out |
Dogs should have fresh water at all times, but it varies greatly on how much they need to drink. Some dogs get nearly all their water needs from their food, while other dogs that eat kibble will drink more plain water. Other things that factor in are how hot it is, how much exercise the dog gets, and even how dry the air is. Dogs lose moisture when they breathe, and the drier the air the more moisture they would lose. However, this isn't as complicated as it sounds, if your dog is healthy and you present him with fresh water, he will drink the amount he needs. If you water tastes bad, as has too much chlorine, filter systems, and even refrigerating it overnight will help it loose the chlorine taste, but most dogs aren't that fussy, and will gladly drink muddy water. Don't force water on your dog, if anything you will teach him water is bad. Remember the old saying, "You can lead a dog to water, but you can't make him drink." What I'm trying to say, is don't worry about it. :D About your avatar, nondonating members can only use an avatar no bigger than 75 pixels, in inches thats about 1.042 inches. Let me know if you need any help with that. |
