is it time??? Maggie will be 1 year old on Oct 1st. I was wondering when do I switch from puppy food to regular?? Also, she is extremely picky....any suggestions what to switch to if it is time?? thanks!! |
My Lil Miss Maggy May will be 1 year in November. I spoke with my vet about when to switch her and he said it was ok to go ahead and start the switch anywhere between 10 and 12 months, it's the large breed dogs that need to stay on the puppy food a year or longer. So, I started very slowly switching Maggy May over to adult dog food about 4 days ago. She was on Wellness Just For Puppy's (Super 5 Mix) and I'm switching her to Wellness Small Breed Super 5 Mix Adult Health. She was getting to be a lil chunky butt with the puppy formula after her spay, the doc said I may want to give her a lil less food. I used to give her 3/4ths cup (what it called for on the bag) and then I cut it down a lil from that. The adult mix has less calories and after I get her switched over completely to just that, I'll see how her weight does with the recommended suggested feeding. If she's still a lil chunky butt, I'll speak with her vet again about how much I should give her. it's a really awesome food though and Maggy May does so well on it. Good luck to you. |
Puppies aren't fully developed till 18 months old. Even though they don't look like they are growing after 12 months of age, their vital organs continue to develope for 6 more months. I'd keep her on what she's eating for a few more months. Of course I don't recommend dog food and I think dogs that are fed a home cooked diet are happier, healthier and live longer. With all the recalls, I wouldn't take chances. |
thank you both for your responses.. i appreciate it!! |
Hot Rod was such a pickey eater. He went from dry to wet to home cooked (sorta). I switched him at about a year. Now believe it or not, with Maggie eating her puppy food kibble, that's what Hot Rod wants! So I am putting in some of puppy kibble with his adult and he seems happy. Go figure. Hey, there's 3 Maggy/Maggie May/Maes. :p:p |
My vet told me to switch at a yr but I could go a little longer even because they are a small breed |
