What a breeder should cover? I would like to find out what other breeders do and what owners want. right before I posted this I called a vets office as a puppy ( who is the product of my breeding) has a small umbilical hernia repaired. I paid the bill. I do NOT mind paying for this. I tell everyone who takes home one of my babies. I will pay for anything that is a defect of birth or genetics. If you have ANY other problems call me and I will help you. I have paid for the spay of a owner that could not afford it. I have paid for grooming for an elderly lady. I have paid for heartguard. Etc etc I feel that I do need to stop being quite so free with paying for things.. I am raising 5 human children and frankly we do live on a budget. I do not skimp on vet care or food etc for my dogs. They get the best of the best and I feel a huge responsibility for the puppies I breed. I will take any of them back at any time. I pay for all 3 sets of shots no matter when they leave. but then spay and grooming and a hernia and the list goes on. This is the only medical defect I have ever had!!! I am thinking of only paying for anything that is genetic or present at birth. I would not limit a time for anything genetic. Am I wrong? what do those of you breed cover? Owners what do you think a breeder should cover or wish they had etc? Sorry for making this long. I need to do the right thing. I can't just pass them off and say see ya! But I need to set a limit as well. |
I am an owner and here is what I want from my breeder..... I want a mentally stable as well as a physically well dog and for you to cover any genetic defects in both areas and be aware of what maybe in your lines..... Now I am going to have fallen for my baby long before I take him out the door the first day you give him to me.... so no trading back just help to pay for a knee fixed or eye work or a visit to the behaviourist.... NOTE I said help... can be with money a help pay part or all or even just a shoulder. I am far from rich but insurance coverage and a little help from you and me we get the dog fixed. What I should do is cover my costs like heart guard and grooming and spay as I choice to take a dog.. it be like a car dealer paying for my oil change just cause I bought a car from him.. give me a warranty for that car or dog and it is my responsibility to maintain it. Oh if I buy a car will the dealer fill my tank with gas just cause I bought it from him.. you know gas is going up and he did sell me a big truck when I just needed to get around.... Hummm LOL If I can not maintain my dog, then please be willing to take the dog back and I will not expect you to buy it back or help please help me place my loved one in a safe home. Make sense?? Oh for those reading it I do not have one of this ladies dogs/puppies I just answered like I might or could one day. JL |
i agree. before someone buys a puppy they should know what it will cost to maintain it. i do think it is generous for you to help but its not your responsibility to pay for grooming.. someone who is buying a yorkie or any long haired dog should think about grooming costs. and especially flea and heartworm medicines! i like you am to nice when it comes to animals.. i work part time and make minimum wage and still spay and nueter strangers pets because they do not want to. it is something we pet lovers have to work on |
Opps double posted Sorry! |
I am just curious do you have a contract with your puppies? If not I think I'd work one up bc to be honest it sounds like your getting taken advantage of from people. I agree with JL, she makes some great points. I think before purchasing the dog the potential owner needs to know the costs of taking care of it. They should do some research and I'm sure they'll have plenty of questions for you. I think the usual necessities for caring for a dog is the owner's responsibity not yours. Sounds like you've been more then generous with your buyers. :) I think most people want the same things. A healthy puppy and the breeder to be available if they need them, not financially though ;) Hope you figure something out. Best wishes!:) |
Thank you guys, I do talk about grooming, heartguard, flea control, and basic medical care etc with people before they take one of the babies home. I think they simply see how much I do care. I think I will rewrite my contract and post it here to see what people here think. I work hard to make sure they are physically and mentally healthy. I will give this contract another try and pot again. If anyone else out there has an opinion on this I would love to hear from you. |
