I need help with my Yorkie Toby!!! First I just want to say Hi to whom ever read this. I am a new Yorkie owner. I have never had one I usually rescue pit bulls. Anyways here is my problem I just got Toby form a person who livs down the street. He told me that when you open the door he likes to fly outof it. So that was the first thing we accomplished. Now if he gets startld or get touched on the paws or the back end he nips, and yelps. Today for an example I was lying on the couch with him and I knew he was near my legs, I stretched out and he nipped at my ankel. Last night he was laying at my husbands feet and he moved his feet away from Toby. Toby decided to nip his feet. The previous owner never mentioned this all the person said was he was about to give up on him and take him to the shelter, which of course I didn't allow. How do I handle this problem. He also lets me brush him after his bath but when I went to brush his back end he tried to bite. The previous owner also said he has to be put to sleep in order to get his nail done. So, how should I go about dealing with Toby because I do not want to have to give him up. |
I wonder if he's in any kind of pain, since he nips and yelps when you touch his back:confused: :( The first thing I would do would be to take him to the vet and tell them what's going on with him, and to make sure he's healthy. It's going to take some time for him to trust you. He may have been mistreated at his last home:cry: Make your touching him a good thing by giving small treats when he allows you to handle him and touch his paws without nipping. Praise him a lot too, when he's good:love: Most of all, be patient;) Good luck, I hope that he comes around with lots of love and TLC:thumbup: |
Thanks for the info :teeth::woof:I plan to take him to the vet. the previous owner gave me all the paper work on him so he was at the vet. in Aug. I think I have already gained his trust to a point and can't wait to gain more of it. Its not that his back hurts him when we touch or pet him, he does the nipping thing when he is startled is what it seems like. Me personally I think he was abused, but its all good now he is going to be spled with me. He has 3 childern to play with and does great with them. I will work on the paw thing already started it. |
First I'd like to welcome you to YT! Thanks for giving this guy a home. He's just probably scared and he nips...this is going to take time and patience and if you have that you'll be fine. I rescued my little girl almost a year ago and I would say that she's finallly learning that its okay to sit next to me and its okay to give me kisses. She still does not like to be picked up a certain way so I have to approach her in a very soft spoken way. It takes time but it is so rewarding. Good luck! |
Hi there and welcome to YT :D I was thinking that he may have experienced sopme kind of Trauma too. Something that tells him touch is a bad thing, and he is very scared. With Lots of patience, and time he should come around. I am glad he is in a loving home now. taking him to the vet needs to be done as soon as possible. talk to the vet about what you have observed , maybe he can give you suggestions. :aimeeyork |
I want to congratulate you on your rescue mission. We don't really know what we are getting into when we rescue do we? I rescued a little girl last week, and I'm working through some issues with her. At first she was scared to death, but never snippy though. I know that's hard, but you'll work through all these problems in no time. Don't give up, be patient and loving. When your family bonds with this baby I feel sure the nipping issues will cease. The rewards you will receive from this rescue...far outweigh the issues. Good luck to you, and keep us posted. |
